Chapter 50
Behind the two witches laughing merrily, a dark shadow fell. It was Virelda, her face set in a scowl, with her invoked, Scarlis, beside her. As if echoing his mistress’s mood, Scarlis let out a sharp, mocking hiss.
“Are you done with your work, or are you just here to gossip?”
Virelda’s gaze swept over the witches one by one, interrogating them without words.
“Oh! Right, we had things to do!”
“So busy! We’re really busy!”
The witches deliberately made a show of bustling about before scattering in all directions to escape Virelda. Zynie tried to slip away as well. But unfortunately, she was caught before she could.
“Is Fay here?”
“I–I think she’s at Mr. Bilter’s carpentry shop…”
Zynie answered in a small voice. She’d already been scolded several times for dragging her feet instead of bringing Fay back, so she shrank even more in front of Virelda.
Virelda sharply turned her head toward the workshop and immediately strode off.
Fay’s in danger! Sensing trouble, Zynie hurried after her.
“Fay probably doesn’t know you’re looking for her! I went to her house, but we kept missing each other!”
She tried to defend Fay as best she could, hoping to cool Virelda’s anger. But Virelda merely shot her an annoyed glance and flung open the workshop door.
“You’ll break the door!”
Bilter snapped angrily, outraged that someone had handled his shop so roughly. Unlike Zynie, who gasped at the sudden shout, Virelda stood her ground.
Yes, I did it. So what? She didn’t say it out loud, but her expression said everything. Realizing who the culprit was, Bilter snorted.
“What do you want?”
His voice softened considerably as he spoke, tapping his shoulder with a hammer as if it were a massager.
“I’ve got no business with you, so stay out of it.”
“Well, that’s rude—storming into my shop and talking like that.”
“Fay.”
“Tch. Do whatever you want.”
Bilter scoffed and jerked his chin toward Fay. Having just finished listening to instructions for a task, Fay trotted over to Virelda.
“What’s going on? Zynie too?”
Zynie’s heart pounded. Fay’s bright smile—completely unaware of what was coming—only made her more anxious.
Please don’t grill her too hard. If Virelda said anything too harsh, Zynie had already decided she’d step in and take Fay’s side. She was scared, but she’d endure it if she had to.
But the atmosphere was… strange.
“I just wanted to see if there’s been any progress.”
Fay might be cheerful because she had no idea Virelda was angry—but why was there no anger at all in Virelda’s voice?
She should have been furious. Yet her tone was gentler than even when she’d spoken to Bilter. Almost like long ago, back when the two of them had still been close.
Something felt off. Zynie focused intently on their conversation.
“About your invoked. Have you figured out what it is yet?”
“Ah… about that…”
Fay smiled awkwardly and let out a long sigh.
“I’m sorry. I’ve been observing him, and I’ve asked him directly more than once—but I still don’t know.”
“He won’t answer your questions properly?”
“It’s not that he won’t answer, exactly…”
“Then?”
“He just keeps calling himself a ‘ruler.’”
Fay’s cheeks flushed slightly, embarrassed to even say the word. She assumed it was just Alnazir’s boast, and that Virelda would scoff the moment she heard it.
Sure enough, Virelda frowned, as if doubting her own ears.
“What did you say?”
“I mean—‘ruler.’ I didn’t make it up! He really said that himself!”
Fay hastily clarified, afraid of being misunderstood. But the more she spoke, the more serious Virelda’s expression became. She turned to Scarlis and asked—in the language of snakes—whether it knew what a ‘ruler’ was.
She could have used the common tongue and her invoked would’ve understood, but hiding information through serpent speech had long since become a habit.
Fay watched Virelda with admiration. She thought it was impressive. Unlike her, Fay had no idea where Alnazir truly came from—let alone how to imitate his language.
My friend really is amazing.
But while Fay looked on with admiration and envy, Zynie’s expression slowly hardened. She hadn’t known at all that Fay had successfully summoned an invoked. She didn’t know what had happened between them—or whether they’d truly reconciled.
Why didn’t she tell me? Why only Virelda…? The young witch didn’t dare interrupt, but the hurt burned quietly inside her.
Alnazir wasn’t pleased either. Arms crossed, he watched as he was completely sidelined. When the snake-handling witch appeared, he’d expected Fay to immediately leap into his arms. But instead, she stood there smiling brightly at the black-haired witch.
Much more brightly. Much more sweetly than she did with him.
