Because of that, the broom shattered before he could stop Fay.

The place she had been sitting collapsed beneath her, and without its power of flight, she lost her balance and flailed in midair.

“Fay, you idiot!”

Virelda hurriedly pulled out her staff to catch her. But in the blink of an eye, something black snatched Fay away and vanished.

Alnazir had realized that if she fell from this height, a human would not survive. To save her, he yanked his tentacle back and pulled her into his arms.

The problem was that his body had only moments ago been spinning in a wide circle. When the magic broke, the pulling force disappeared as well, and his body went flying before he could stop it.

“Foolish.”

As they hurtled through the air, slicing through the wind, Alnazir clicked his tongue.

“It’s—it’s all according to plan…!”

Fay let out a half-mad laugh.

It seemed the terror had scrambled her mind. Feeling a strange pang of pity, Alnazir cradled her fragile head—one that would surely be crushed on impact—and braced for the fall.

With a thunderous crash, the two of them slammed down in the middle of enemy territory. The impact was like a meteor strike, throwing the opposing camp into chaos.

“What was that?”

“A witch! It’s a witch attack!”

Through the swirling dust, a man who recognized her witch’s cloak shouted.

Alnazir couldn’t understand the words, but he could tell the humans were panicking.

“You’re always whining, but I didn’t know you could pull something like this off. Fine. You surprised me. That’s enough, let’s leave before this becomes a nuisance.”

He patted Fay on the back, suggesting they depart before things grew troublesome. Thanks to him, she was unharmed and fully conscious.

“I’m not going.”

Despite having landed safely because of him, she stubbornly refused again.

Alnazir began to feel a flicker of exhaustion. For a fleeting moment, he even thought it would have been easier if she had simply fainted from the impact.

“How long are you going to keep doing foolish things?”

“It’s not foolish! This went exactly as I planned!”

Declaring it a complete success, Fay shook off his hand and struggled to her feet. Though she wobbled, she relied on her staff rather than his support, backing away from him.

Alnazir remained seated, glaring at her with displeasure.

“Your plan was to bring me here? I’m not going to lay a hand on them just because you did this.”

“I just wanted to separate an uncontrollable, dangerous invoked from the people I care about.”

Her tone sharpened.

“Oh, great and mighty ruler Alnazir. I can handle the attack on my own. I don’t need your help!”

The words don’t need grated on Alnazir’s nerves. He frowned and rose to his feet.

“And how exactly do you plan to get out of here safely without my help?”

“I’ll figure that out myself.”

“Why cling to pointless pride and stubbornness? If you admit you acted foolishly, I’ll forgive you. Just say you need me.”

If she would only admit she’d misspoken, he was prepared to be generous. For now, at least, he still had the patience to grant mercy.

“You need me to survive.”

“No. I’ve survived just fine without you!”

Now she was pushing him to his limit. Her eyes burned red with anger as she shouted at him.

“You act so superior, but you’re nothing more than a lonely beast.”

“…Lonely? Me?”

Alnazir was taken aback. He had never once considered himself lonely.

“You were probably losing your mind from loneliness and just needed someone to talk to. You wanted a pitiful witch who depended on your help, so you’d have someone who’d deal with you.”

At her accusation, he let out a scoff. And yet—strangely—he found himself at a loss for words. No rebuttal came to mind. All he could manage was a hollow, meaningless laugh.

“You’ll fall back into solitude.”

Once, in a book, he had read:

[Witches are said to wield magic and command summoned creatures,
but I would define them this way:
Those who cast curses and inflict great trials.]

A trial. Back then, Alnazir had thought the human who wrote it was absurdly dramatic.

“You’ll be lonelier than ever, your heart hollowed out. Because no one will ever speak with you again!”

The curse spat out by the furious witch was enough to shake his arrogance. As if to prove she meant it, her form began to fade from her fingertips, gradually vanishing from sight.

This time, Alnazir couldn’t laugh.
