But wait—reaching out toward his privates like that, wouldn’t it look like she was trying to touch him? Depending on who saw it, they might get the wrong idea.

The thought made Fay’s embarrassment double. She was unable to do anything, then finally just covered her eyes with her hand. She should have just done that from the start.

“It—it’d be best if you get out of there quickly. There’s something dangerous in the mist!”

Fay shouted, still covering her eyes.

“What’s dangerous?”

Even though she was warning him out of concern, the man seemed totally unfazed.

“T-tentacles. Anyway, just come over here. Get behind me. Oh, but you should really cover yourself first!”

The man glanced down at himself, then made a noise of understanding.

“You mean my male reproductive organ? Was I not supposed to have that visible?”

Did he really just now realize it was inappropriate to show that to a stranger—especially a woman—on their first meeting? Wasn’t it a bit late for that?

He really seemed to be missing a screw somewhere. Fay only lowered her hand after double-checking that he was decently covered.

He had wrapped the cloth that had been over his shoulder around his waist, so at least “it” wasn’t visible anymore. It still looked like it could slip off if he moved too much, but for now, she decided to let it go.

“It’s dangerous, so get behind me.”

Fay tried to banish the mental image of what she’d just seen and motioned for the man to move behind her. He complied without argument, and she stepped in front of him protectively.

“It’s okay. I’ll keep you safe from now on.”

Alnazir tilted his head as he stared at Fay’s back. Just a minute ago, she’d been sobbing and begging him not to kill her, and now she was insisting she’d protect him? He wasn’t sure who was supposed to be protecting whom, but it was a sudden change.

“Why are you trying to protect me?”

“Because I’m a witch.”

The witch gave him a surprisingly confident smile. If he hadn’t already known how frail her body was, he might have even believed her.

Alnazir had to fight the urge to laugh. But at least it seemed like a real conversation was finally possible.

“So, where is this place? Is it your home?”

“Of course not. If I had to live somewhere this creepy, I’d have lost my mind by now. There was an accident and I fell down here. Didn’t the same happen to you?”

She answered easily, without hesitation or discomfort. Becoming human had clearly been the right choice.

Alnazir closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his limbs trembling a little. Maybe it was just unfamiliar, but he decided to chalk it up to being moved. He wanted to see her eyes while they talked. Those dewy green eyes like moss that he’d glimpsed earlier.

“I heard a voice.”

He said, holding himself back from spinning her around by the shoulders. He was still worried that he might accidentally crush her in this unfamiliar form.

“A voice?”

“Your voice.”

The witch whipped her head around. Because of this, he was pleased he could see her moss-green eyes. The eyes wide with surprise allowed him to observe it better.

“Your voice led me here.”

“Oh my god. Did you really come all the way here just to help me? I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for you to get involved. You didn’t have to come save me.”

Something about her saying he ‘didn’t have to’ come irritated Alnazir, and his brow twitched.

“Like I said, I’m a witch. I can take care of myself.”

Fay insisted, waving her staff and forcing a brave smile to hide her nerves. But under his golden gaze, her smile faltered.

Those eyes—why did they look so familiar? Was it just her imagination?

Trying to laugh it off, Fay finally admitted the truth.

“Actually, I’m a bit stuck because I don’t know how to get out of here. If you know the way, could you show me?”

“You want to leave?”

Fay nodded.

“But before that, there’s something we need to deal with.”

“What’s that?”

“The monster hiding in there. I don’t know why it’s gone quiet, but it can’t have gone far. Be careful, and let’s try to sneak past without getting its attention.”

A monster? Was there really something like that?

Alnazir wasn’t sure, but he didn’t argue. Maybe, as such a weak ruler, she was used to being threatened by rivals, and that explained her wariness of the mist. He found it easy to understand her pointless caution.

“So, why did a witch like you end up in a place you don’t know how to escape from?”

“Zynie caused trouble… Never mind. It’s a long story. Anyway, quiet now.”

Fay turned her head sharply and made a “shh” sound.
