Chapter 107
Sylvia’s eyes snapped open.
The moment she realized her husband had left the room, she woke up as if by instinct.
She hadn’t just been pretending to sleep, she really had drifted into a shallow doze. It seemed she’d gained this strange, inexplicable skill.
Lying there, blinking slowly, she carefully propped herself up. She needed to slip away before he noticed and tried to pounce on her again.
“Ugh…”
She ached from head to toe, as if he’d bitten and sucked on every inch of her while she slept. She vaguely remembered seeing his head bobbing near her feet in the middle of the night. Though, half-asleep, she’d dismissed it as a weird dream.
But knowing just how much of a pervert he was, maybe that assumption was the strange part.
As soon as she set her feet on the floor, his s***n dripped to the ground.
By now, even that unnerving sensation had become familiar. Nearly every night, she was dragged off by him. Even though she tried to avoid him at every turn, constantly inventing excuses to keep busy around the estate, all it took was one careless moment and a hand would snake out from the darkness to grab her.
She should have learned her lesson by now. Maybe she’d just move her quarters to a separate wing entirely. This mansion had only belonged to the Alexander family for about twenty years, and there were still plenty of unused rooms left behind by the previous owners. She’d have the maids and servants clean out a new space for her.
Even after making up her mind, she could only hobble across the room, groaning from the pain, to thoroughly wash herself and slip into a simple dress, preparing to leave.
Her husband—no, the monster—might have thought she left the estate simply on business, but in truth, Sylvia spent most of her time outside investigating ways to defeat monsters.
And after just ten days, she’d made surprising progress. She had thought the only way to get deadly poison was through the Emperor, but it turned out there were ways to acquire small amounts even on the black market. That was her next step: secure the poison.
Soon, when her husband let his guard down, she’d coat a sharp blade with the toxin and strike a vital spot…
She didn’t really want to kill him. Even though she’d fallen for him before discovering his true nature, and even now still harbored some feelings for him, the thought of living together like this terrified her. Especially knowing he wanted to get her pregnant—it was just too much.
‘So the only solution was to leave. Even if the monster truly loved me, I am still human.’
Lately, she’d become aware of subtle changes in her body, but her resolve remained firm. She didn’t even realize that when she passed out, he sometimes bit down on his finger and put it against her lips.
She was unconsciously ignoring all the signs her body was changing into something less and less human.
“I think I could walk… With this much strength left.”
Except for the times she slept with her monster husband, her body was almost overflowing with energy. Even now, just moments after waking from a near-comatose sleep, she felt strong enough that taking a carriage seemed unnecessary. Still, it was better to leave quickly, before he came back.
She climbed into the carriage she’d arranged and closed her eyes as it set off. Her heart pounded in time with the horse’s hooves, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was staring at her through the carriage walls.
‘…It’s just my imagination.’
No matter how monstrous he was, he had mountains of work to do. Both the Emperor and Sylvia herself completely misunderstood Kuinan. He was a lazy monster who, even as the head of the swamp, rarely bothered to do his job. He only showed any motivation when it came to indulging his ancient, selfish desires.
Always darting about.
Sylvia had no idea he was letting her go on purpose, or that he already knew she was looking for poison. She wandered the black market, completely at ease, never suspecting she might get caught, and in the end she got her hands on the toxin.
She suddenly remembered the deep blue dagger he’d once given her as a keepsake—just as she gripped the tiny vial of deadly poison.
