“Please be quiet.”

“Why?”

“Because the monsters can hear us! Even when we were all silent last night, disaster struck. If we talk freely like this, we’ll both be dead.”

She glanced at the dagger pressed at her husband’s waist. She’d heard the poison wasn’t just lightly applied but attached by a special method that lasted at least two months.

Even if he carelessly kept it in, the effect endured. But if left unused, even that would be useless.

“If you’re just going to keep it sheathed all the time, give it back to me.”

Sylvia complained, and Lancart reluctantly looked down at the dagger and took it in hand. His expression darkened, as if angry with her. He didn’t realize he’d reverted to his usual look, but Sylvia shrank back, feeling intimidated.

‘Should I pretend to kill a few?’

Hector would hate it, but monsters didn’t die easily. Feigning a stab with the sword to the belly or chest and leaving a monster near death would make it seem like he was genuinely fighting them off as a human.

Kuinan struggled silently with the decision.

They walked on for an unknown time. After about an hour of tense silence, Sylvia finally spoke.

“Can’t you stop sulking? I have every reason to be angry. You threatened me to come here even though I said no.”

In a life-or-death situation, her sulking husband was pathetic. Objectively, Sylvia was a very patient wife—she always forgave his bizarre behavior and tried to sympathize with his situation. Even if he threatened her family.

“Huh? Sulking?”

“You kept walking looking down at the ground with a sour face. Isn’t that sulking?”

Lancart stopped abruptly and looked back at the clearly upset Sylvia. He had indeed walked with a gloomy face for a long time—but that was his natural expression and habit in the swamp.

The ground itself was the most dangerous thing here, so he had to watch it carefully.

“I was looking at the ground because I was worried you’d fall.”

He had lived here for centuries and didn’t need to watch the ground closely. But Sylvia was different. If he looked away for even a moment, she’d sink into the mud, choking on wet earth. He wanted to return to his true self and carry her.

“Well…”

“I was just thinking and couldn’t control my expression. You think I’m such a fool?”

The ‘foolish’ husband grumbled as if insulted. Sylvia suddenly felt tension release and relaxed. At least he wasn’t angry. Surprisingly, he said he kept looking at the ground out of concern for her.

“How will we get food?”

They had lost all their people, weapons, and supplies. Though the pack contained some modest snacks, it wouldn’t be enough to survive here for days. Even if they hunted successfully, they might starve on the way back.

“There’s always a way.”

Her husband answered confidently, turning and smiling. His face showed no trace of tension—he looked cheerful as if he’d returned home.

Except for when he was walking while staring at the ground to watch over her, he seemed in good spirits.

Many questions about her husband arose, but arguing now would only lead to more fights. Not overly curious at the moment, Sylvia followed silently as he led her across the desolate, green-tinged land.

Blavat Swamp…

Though she couldn’t know what it looked like before monsters took over, now it was exactly as the name implied—a treacherous swamp.

Her husband’s back made a picturesque scene as he walked away. Sylvia stood still, watching his steady figure before stepping forward, letting the swamp swallow her.

Ssss, sssllluurrr—

The sound of footsteps pressing on the soft earth turned into a dragging, rubbing noise. Unconsciously adapting perfectly to the soft ground’s feel, Sylvia followed cautiously with a calm expression and eyes alert.
