Chapter 9
With the voice saying, “Come in,” Sylvia entered the Duke’s bedroom, then wandered around him, unsure of what to do.
Her target was him. She had to ask him to sleep together. But he just looked down at her with an innocent, clueless expression, as if wondering what she wanted.
Sylvia suddenly felt a strong dizziness.
‘Don’t you understand? I mean, get pregnant, get pregnant.’
Rossa’s sharp voice struck a corner of her mind like a hammer, and she bit her lip tightly. The handsome man watching her intently suddenly stepped closer, standing just inches away, invading even the minimum space needed for a conversation, and said abruptly,
“Is there a problem?”
“N-no.”
A breath of air blew against her philtrum, startling Sylvia and pushing her back to reality. As he approached, she hesitated, taking a step back to create some distance, carefully choosing her words. She was unsure how to bring this up.
“…Duke?”
“Yes?”
“Tonight… you’ll sleep in this bedroom, right?”
It was a foolish question. Of course, he would sleep in his own bed. In response, the Duke tilted his head the other way, giving a strange, almost animal-like gesture that sparked not just pity but suspicion in Sylvia.
Then he answered plainly,
“No.”
“…What?”
“That bed looks uncomfortable. I was thinking of sleeping outside in the front yard. Would that be a problem?”
Before trying to get him to sleep with her, Sylvia had to convince him to sleep on the bed first. She never imagined he’d forget such a basic part of daily life.
Faced with his near-idiotic answer, Sylvia grew bolder. If she told him they had always slept together in the bedroom, wouldn’t that settle it?
“No, Duke. You have to sleep here.”
“Oh, okay…”
“And you have to sleep with me. That’s how it’s always been.”
At that moment, Lancart’s eyebrow twitched. Then a faint smirk appeared. Sylvia kept her eyes down in embarrassment and missed his expression.
Kuinan, who had heard something from the late Lancart, thought this adorable woman was surprisingly good at lying.
“You say it’s always been that way?”
They’d supposedly never even touched each other, yet this cute girl… Kuinan watched her slowly nod her head up and down with half-lidded eyes. He chuckled inwardly.
‘Interesting woman.’
When he shrugged as if to say fine, she finally lifted her head. Her warm blue eyes met his, but her gaze drifted aimlessly over his pupils. Kuinan held her gaze without looking away.
As he leaned in closer, she grew uncomfortable and pulled back.
‘When did she ask me to ‘sleep together’ again?’
She had lied to lure her husband into the bedroom, yet now she looked like someone dealing with a pervert. Kuinan snorted in amusement. He was no longer surprised by her constant strange behavior, and Sylvia pretended not to notice her husband’s disdainful snort.
Just then, there was a knock at the door from outside.
“Your Grace, this is Doctor Osborn. May I come in for an examination?”
The moment Kuinan heard the polite voice of the elderly human doctor, his expression immediately darkened, knowing his true identity was about to be exposed.
* * *
In the end, the doctor was unable to conduct the examination and was chased out of the study.
Every time the doctor asked a question, Kuinan stubbornly dragged on his words and dodged the answers entirely. Starting from the third blocked question, the doctor began sweating profusely and ultimately left without even taking his pulse.
Kuinan wiped off the wrist that the doctor had nearly grabbed with a grim expression.
‘I almost got found out.’
Monsters’ pulses are several times slower than humans’. Though his appearance was convincingly human, his internal organs were still those of a monster. Since it was proven that there were no wounds, the doctor likely concluded there was no physical abnormality. The doctor would surely relay that part to that annoying woman downstairs who kept fussing.
“Duke.”
“Hm?”
His wife, who had been watching the entire examination with concern, called out to him gently. Kuinan blinked and turned toward Sylvia.
He had a cleanliness obsession. Or rather, not the monster, but Duke Alexander.
Sylvia clearly remembered how her husband would immediately pull away if she so much as touched his fingertips. Though he allowed the doctor to make contact, she concluded that his germophobia had worsened because of this recent incident.
