Chapter 79

Not long after we entered the tower, a staircase appeared. It wasn’t very high. After ascending a single flight, a room came into view. Father swept forward and pointed at the door.

“[This is my room. It’s a bit humble to show my new daughter-in-law, so I’m a little embarrassed.]”

“That’s where my husband is. Don’t be too surprised if you happen to see him.”

“[Welcome to my dream house!]”

I was a little confused. Mother and Kin seemed subdued, but Father was cheerfully laughing and even dancing.

“[The whole family is together! Now I can die happy! Ha ha ha!]”

I tried to keep a calm expression, avoiding looking at Father, who was excitedly dancing about the family being reunited. If my gaze lingered on him, he would surely become suspicious.

Amidst the solemn atmosphere, Father drifted over to Mother’s shoulder.

“[Darling, look at this beautiful newlywed couple! We were like that once. Oh, it brings tears to my eyes. Sob.]”

“…Strange. My shoulder feels unusually heavy today.”

I know why. Father is clinging to Mother’s shoulder, crying.

I kept that fact to myself, my eyes darting around. Mother coughed, glancing at Father’s physical body.

“I told you I’d introduce you to our daughter-in-law yesterday. I brought her today.”

Mother’s eyes met mine. I stepped forward intuitively and bowed.

“Hello, Father. …I am Ailee Blashur.”

“[Oh, look at her manners. Darling, sniff, our son is all grown up.]”

Father’s faint, tearful voice, filled with bright-eyed wonder, reached me from behind. I tried not to look back, quietly observing his physical form.

Father, with his eyes peacefully closed, looked quite different from the Father I was currently seeing. With his eyes closed, he had the sharp aura of a general intimidating his enemies.

Mother pulled out a chair for me, and once again, I was seated between her and Kin. Kin twitched his eyebrows in displeasure but said nothing. Instead, he greeted his father.

“Father, I’m here too. You’ve aged since I last saw you.”

“[How many times have I told you not to say such things to your father?]”

Father’s disgruntled voice came from behind. Mother, seemingly used to Kin’s remarks, briefly pressed her hand to her forehead.

“Anyway, darling. Isn’t our daughter-in-law beautiful and lovely? …If Dale were awake, he would probably carry you around the territory, showing you off.”

“[You know me so well, darling. If I could get up, I’d carry our daughter-in-law around right now. Besides, I thought our new daughter-in-law was a fairy at first. Didn’t you think so too, darling?]”

Why is it my face that’s burning? I tried to calm my racing heart at the mortifying words coming from nearby. A couple is a couple for a reason. Unsure how to respond, I remained silent.

At the mention of a fairy, I felt Kin chuckle softly beside me.

“You definitely would have yelled that she was a fairy.”

“[Yes, yes. I really thought she was a fairy.]”

“It would be nice if you could wake up and see her properly. …Anyway.”

“[I’m looking at her right now. Speaking of our new daughter-in-law, darling, she seems quite unwell. I think we should hunt a dragon and make her a tonic with its bones.]”

At the mention of my illness, I almost lost control of my expression. Even though I knew Kin and Mother couldn’t hear Father, my heart momentarily sank.

“[Our new daughter-in-law says there’s nothing to worry about, but I can’t help but worry.]”

For a moment, it felt like Father wasn’t talking to Mother, but directly to me, subtly probing my inner thoughts.

Thump-thump, my heart pounded. What should I do if Father tries to shatter another window? I hoped the moment would pass peacefully.

“We’re planning to go flower viewing tomorrow. Don’t be sulky if we go without you.”

“[What? Flower viewing without me?]”

Thankfully, Mother’s words defused the situation. And Father seemed genuinely offended by her remark.

“I’ll take you when you wake up, but you’re not awake. So even if you sulk about this, I won’t console you.”

“[How can you say that! Darling! Darling!]”

Father’s translucent spirit flickered between red and blue. Since I was the only one who could see him, I had no choice but to appease him. For the first time since arriving, aside from my initial greeting, I spoke.

“…It would be nice if Father could come too…”

“[Only my new daughter-in-law cares about me! I’m so touched. Sob.]”

Father pulled out a handkerchief from somewhere and dabbed at his eyes. Kin shrugged at my words.

“It’s Father’s fault, so you don’t need to feel bad. If he’s so upset, he can open his eyes himself.”

“[My fault? …It is my fault, but our son has such a sharp tongue. Our daughter-in-law is too good for him…! It feels like just yesterday he tried to put pebbles in his eyes during a staring contest. You rascal.]”
