Chapter 86
Chapter 86
“If you can touch it now, I’ll admit you won.”
I immediately stretched out my arm. Kin didn’t stop me. He just continued to hold me tight.
Just a little further, a little more…
“Try harder. You’re almost there.”
Almost there? My arm was screaming in protest. I’d never stretched it this far in my life. Defeated, I glared at him.
“So, I win?”
“.…” I refused to answer.
He then had the audacity to ask, “Want to play again?” I lightly kicked his shin with my bare foot. He nimbly dodged, then, with infuriating nonchalance, began to speak of his wish.
“Hmm, my wish is…” His blue eyes flicked upwards towards the cliff, then back to me. I followed his gaze, then returned my attention to him. The large rock obscured the view of the cliff.
“A kiss. Right here.” His long finger pointed to his lips. Without hesitation, I voiced my opinion.
“That’s childish.”
“I like childish things.”
Now, my glare was fixed not on his eyes, but his lips. Silence descended, punctuated only by the rhythmic crash of waves.
“Don’t want to? I can change it to something else.”
Unsure what other ridiculous request he might concoct, I hesitated. While I was pondering, Kin continued in a casual tone, “Or how about a kiss every morning? Don’t like that either? Fine. You have a choice: a kiss every morning, or a kiss right now. If I were you, I’d choose the former, my lady.”
Kin needed to learn that words coming out of his mouth didn’t automatically make them sensible.
…Of course, it wasn’t exactly flattering that I couldn’t even manage something this simple between a husband and wife.
Just close my eyes and get it over with. Resigned, I grabbed his sleeve, then tilted my wide-brimmed hat back precariously. There were no more obstacles in my line of sight.
“Bend down a little. I can’t reach.”
Kin obediently lowered himself. Eyes squeezed shut, I vowed to move faster than light.
Kin had kissed me before, but I had never kissed him. That made it even more embarrassing. My heart hammered against my ribs as I leaned in. It was probably still racing from all that running.
I wasn’t sure where my lips were, or if they were aimed correctly. In that brief moment, I seemed to forget how to breathe. I had intended a swift peck, but I couldn’t tell if I was moving quickly or not. Time seemed to stretch, distorting the fleeting moment into an eternity.
Finally, my lips landed, pressing softly against his. The sensation of yielding flesh against mine sent a jolt through me, and I quickly pulled away.
It was just a kiss. Why did I even hold my breath? I repeated the question internally, but it didn’t quite capture the lingering sensation. My heart was still racing, making it impossible to dismiss the act as insignificant. A thrill, a mix of excitement and something akin to happiness, tingled in my fingertips.
I opened my eyes the instant I pulled back.
Our gazes locked.
Seeing his face, my embarrassment vanished, replaced by a surprised chuckle.
“You…”
His face, all the way down to his neck, was flushed crimson. I decided to retract my earlier comparison to a predatory beast. Even blushing, he was still strikingly handsome, with sharp, defined features. But the way his brows furrowed slightly, a clear sign of flustered delight, dispelled any lingering image of a predator.
Honestly. He asked for a kiss, and now he’s acting so shy. Anyone would think I’d just ravished him.
The confident, teasing Kin was gone, replaced by this blushing, stammering mess who couldn’t meet my eyes. I couldn’t help but laugh.
My face is probably red too. But not as red as his, surely. I felt a slight warmth in my cheeks, but his entire face and neck were ablaze. I wiggled my fingers discreetly, the memory of the touch still vivid. My heart fluttered. It was just a kiss, a simple peck, the kind even children exchanged, yet it felt so… significant.
The unfamiliar sight of the ocean, the novel sensation of sand beneath my bare feet, the warmth of his hand in mine–it all conspired to make me giddy and act out of character. Like laughing freely in front of him.
I couldn’t help but smile.
Like a lovestruck adolescent, Kin continued to blush, utterly flustered. My own heart was pounding, my fingertips tingling, but I feigned composure. Seeing his reaction made it surprisingly easy. A giggle escaped my lips.
“Why are you so embarrassed?” I asked, mimicking his usual teasing grin.
Kin stared at me, then a hesitant smile spread across his still-flushed face. He looked adorably foolish, which only made me laugh harder.
“You’re… even more beautiful when you smile,” he stammered, his usual smooth eloquence replaced by halting phrases. My laughter died down as the heat crept up my neck and into my ears.
He gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear. Even with that sweet look in his eyes, my heart remained… surprisingly unaffected.
Our gazes met and held.
My hat nearly slipped off, but Kin caught it effortlessly. His hand moved from my waist to the nape of my neck, his arm now encircling me.
“.…”
Even a novice in love like myself recognized the charged atmosphere. I felt myself drawn into the depths of his blue eyes, a pleasant dizziness clouding my mind. My heart pounded. Time seemed to stop, sound fading away.
