Craving for more? Read the COMPLETE novel on ko-fi!

At Cressida’s words, Arendtert’s face brightened. He grasped his mother’s hand and said,

“If Euclid dies, I can become the Crown Prince.”

Cressida showed a tempted expression at Arendtert’s persuasion. He didn’t miss the moment and continued.

“I have a plan. This time, before opening a Maw, we separate Euclid and Syllie. If a large Maw opens when he has no Purifier, what could that bastard possibly do?”

“…So you’re not completely thoughtless.”

Cressida narrowed her eyes. Sitting down on the sofa, she gestured for Arendtert to come closer. With a tense expression, he quickly sat before her.

“This time, we were too impatient. Opening a large Maw in the Lekan Forest was fine, but we underestimated Syllie and the First Prince’s matching rate.”

Arendtert still called Euclid, the newly appointed Crown Prince, ‘First Prince’. He couldn’t accept that Euclid had become Crown Prince. The same was true for Cressida. The seat of Crown Prince and the position of the next Emperor rightfully belonged to her son.

Cressida had done everything she could to give Arendtert victory in the Crown Prince Selection.

That was why she opened a Maw.

Arendtert choosing the slow-moving carriage as transportation had been intentional. He planned to arrive after Euclid’s group reached the Lekan Forest and got swallowed by a massive Maw.

But the plan went wrong from there.

Euclid handled the Maw far more easily than expected. He even gained points from the monsters that emerged. The very method they used to corner him ended up helping him.

And while Arendtert, unaware of that, was taking his time, his base camp became flooded by the marsh. Unfortunately, the marsh had risen in the depths of dawn, causing most Holy Knights to lose their lives in vain.

He hurried back to reorganize, but the news reached the Noble Council, and he ended up making the worst possible move.

Arendtert was furious with himself. And he was angry with Grizelle too. If she hadn’t kept appearing in his sight throughout the journey, if she hadn’t irritated him, he might have chosen a more reasonable location for the base camp.

He had brought Grizelle with him to perform some meaningless purification, but she had only been a burden.

To Arendtert, a Purifier was a burden. But Euclid was different. He and Sylaria were said to have a record-breaking matching rate. With her, he could pour out divine power freely and even eradicate a Maw.

But if Sylaria disappeared from his side.

If she were to lose her life.

‘If I can’t have her, then rather than letting that bastard benefit, killing them is better.’

Arendtert smiled darkly. His eyes gleamed as he looked at his mother.

“If Syllie dies, Euclid becomes nothing. All we need to do is open a Maw and kill her.”

“How do you intend to kill Sylaria when she’s under the First Prince’s protection?”

Cressida asked, intrigued. She liked Arendtert’s plan, but she saw little possibility of carrying it out.

Euclid behaved like someone who had never lived without Sylaria. He was completely attached to her. Anyone could tell just by watching the two together. There was no way he would allow any danger near her, and if anything suspicious happened, he would notice immediately.

“I already have a plan for that. Mother, just prepare to open a Maw.”

Arendtert spoke confidently and smiled. Cressida looked at her son with a mixture of doubt and belief.

And she thought once more how wonderful it would have been if she had birthed one more son besides him.

Walking through the garden with Isidor, Elenia froze when an unwelcome visitor appeared. Kneeling before her was Grizelle.

“Ellie, I’m sorry, truly. I lost my mind for a moment back then. I went crazy with jealousy, and in wanting to hurt Syllie, I ended up putting you in danger.”

Too late even if she doesn't. All the past logic and decisions don't disappear.

Earlier chapters had the prince protect Grizzly but barely manages to do anything. Now he doesn't have Knights wanting to serve him as easily either. Sure Crown Prince can close the maw but they plan on ending him. I don't know why author seems so keen on lowering intelligence of characters whether villain or ally. Empress was the (intelligent) scheming type and the Prince was the (manipulative) user of a lover that could supposedly convince you to sell a liver. As you read EVERYONE begins to lose IQ points and EQ points to make convenient and stupid choices for author plot. Rinse and repeat. Now the Empress isn't an evil mastermind but a 3rd rate Villainess full of cliche and the Prince is a physically and emotionally weak mama's boy who listens to the Empress and can't think without.
