The invisible thread snapped as Russell grabbed at her neck.

“Marie, you—”

“I’m sorry, Your Highness. That was a sedative. Even for a strong, extreme-dominant alpha like you… it will keep you asleep for a full day.”

He reached out — perhaps to grab her? Marie took his hand in hers and quietly lowered her gaze. Tears shimmered and fell.

“I heard everything from the duke’s daughter, Your Highness. I understand now. Why you hated me so much. Why you made me a courtesan.”

Swallowing felt like swallowing knives.

She whispered, heart-breakingly soft.

“But even if I’m just the daughter of your enemy… I want to live. So could you let me go? If you’d just stop chasing me and let me go like this…”

Ah, no. The truth is I want to live with you. I want to bear your child, be recognized as your mate and love you.

But Marie couldn’t say that. She held back, swallowing her tears, and supported the man slowly drifting into sleep.

Overwhelmed by his weight, she collapsed onto the bed beneath him, but still managed to shift him to lie beside her, sobbing as she did.

“I don’t want to die by your hand. Because, Your Highness, I dared to—”

She saw his closed eyelids tremble. He had such unbelievable willpower.

His hand stretched out, barely managing to grasp the hem of her sleeve as if to hold her back.

“Because I dared… to look at you.”

Marie lowered her head and kissed his lips. The kiss she had longed for so many times. The one that had filled her with rapture when he kissed her.

“I loved you.”

Russell screamed inwardly. The slipping of his mind and body was unbearable.

No, no! Marie, don’t go.

He felt her presence growing distant. The sorrow and anguish swelling in his chest didn’t belong to him. They were hers.

Marie. My Omega. They belonged to Marie Alphrose

‘Had I… imprinted on her?’

Imprinted…

“Russell.”

He was in agony. She, too, loved him. So why…why was she leaving?

You misheard. You misunderstood. You’re not the daughter of an enemy! It’s my fault. So Marie…don’t go. Don’t leave. Please, hear my apology.

Please, stay by my side.

“I’m sorry.”

No.

That thought was the last thing he was conscious of before everything went dark.

Late at night, two figures stood in front of the Crown Prince’s palace.

One, cloaked deeply, was facing a handsome man who reached out his hand.

“Shall we go?”

The cloaked figure, still glancing back at the palace as if reluctant to leave, turned and took the pale hand. They mounted the horse together.

“Let’s go, Ryan.”

To avoid disturbing the ultra-dominant Alpha’s nerves, the palace was unusually quiet that night, with no one to stop them. Everything went as planned. That night, Marie Alphrose left the palace.

To protect her life and her child.

Believing firmly, with all her heart, that this was her own choice.
