Chapter 8
Each time she heard such violent words, a shudder of terror ran through Lucy. But the moment passed and the fear simply vanished.
After several repetitions, she’d come to let those threats go in one ear and out the other. Though the other maids around her, apparently, did not.
“Tch, I’m sorry. I won’t touch them again. But still, Your Majesty is too harsh. Have I always been treated like this, even in the past?”
When Lucy glanced around as if asking, the maids who had been holding their breath behind the pillars once again bobbed their heads up and down, terrified.
Laegar waved his hand dismissively as if annoyed, and the maids all retreated in an instant.
As silence returned to the bedchamber, a firm arm wrapped around Lucy’s waist and led her far away from the weapons rack.
The moment Laegar settled into the armchair where he always reclined, she seated herself at his feet and tried to peel a grape for him.
Because, unexpectedly, he would eat them well whenever she popped a peeled, glossy one into his mouth.
Lucy’s impatient heart burned with the will to perform her duties properly. Since she messed up everything else, she was determined to find at least one thing she could do well.
‘At this rate, I never know when I’ll be kicked out….’
She’d even learned she was good at polishing weapons, but that had displeased him, so now she couldn’t do it. At least this, though.
But before she could do anything more, her body was lifted and seated on Laegar’s knee.
Lucy wasn’t particularly surprised.
He’d been doing this on and off for the past few days.
Laegar’s body was large, broad, solid, and considerably warm—so much so that sitting on it made her drowsy.
Still, she resolved not to fall asleep this time. Last time she had dozed off, she’d woken up brazenly sprawled atop His Majesty’s bed.
Lucy pressed the peeled grape against his red lips.
The sensual curve of his mouth curled slightly upward, then parted and bit into the grape.
It wasn’t a remarkable scene, yet Lucy stared blankly at the bared white teeth and red tongue.
At the same time, a tingle spread through her finger where his tongue had briefly touched it, and she hurriedly wrapped it with her other hand.
Her concentration scattered, her thoughts meandered unevenly in every direction until they landed on the incident during last night’s bath.
‘…He did the same thing yesterday….’
Last night, while attending his bath, she had slipped on the too-slick edge of the marble tub and fallen.
She had been just about to catch her balance, but the hand that reached out had pulled her into the bath, and there was really nothing she could do.
‘Aaah!’
Soaked like a drowned mouse, Lucy came to her senses to find herself pressed flush against Laegar’s chest, held in his arms.
For the first time, she felt his heart pounding with weighty force and marveled.
A heavy power and vitality radiated from that fierce pulse.
Though he soon released her with an expression somewhere between a smile and not, in that moment, she thought Igor might secretly resemble his uncle.
‘Could it be that Lord Igor, who’s always itching to play pranks, resembles His Majesty as a child?’
But what had made him grow so quiet? Conquering the continent?
Lucy’s trivial wonder couldn’t carry on any further in her thoughts.
Because a hot pair of lips pressed against the nape of her neck.
“Nngh.”
As if branded by a flame, her spine snapped taut instantly.
At her reaction, the lips briefly pulled away, only to press and slowly rub against various spots of her tender skin again.
The large hand wrapped around her waist began gently stroking up her slender side.
Somewhat startled, Lucy stiffened as if electrocuted, and a terribly frayed voice tickled her ear.
“Are you curious about what work you were originally in charge of?”
“Huh… yes. I’m curious.”
Muttering, he drew lines across her skin with the proud bridge of his nose.
“Fine, I’ll tell you. You didn’t originally spend your days doing those kinds of tasks.”
“Huh? Then what?”
Feeling she’d been deceived twice now, Lucy whipped her head around to face him.
Gray eyes, as if flecked with splinters of ice, were entirely projecting her own image back at her. She peered into them as if observing herself trapped at the bottom of a well.
Several seconds passed like that, then his long eyes folded into a fine, self-satisfied curve.
Lucy, witnessing Laegar smile for the very first time, felt a shock like a bell going off in her head.
That was how beautiful it was.
