Chapter 46
Then, he extended the baby deer, precariously dangling from his hand, toward Floria.
Fearing it might fall to the floor, Floria quickly rushed over and cradled the baby deer in her arms.
“Pii.”
A delicate yet sharp sound escaped from the deer’s mouth.
“Does it hurt?”
However, contrary to Floria’s concern, the warm body nestled gently in her arms, its eyes narrowing slightly.
It rubbed its head against her chest as if feeling comforted.
It had been a long time since she held an animal like this.
After her cat Fabian disappeared a few years ago, she hadn’t had the chance to interact with animals, except when riding horses.
The tiny heartbeat fluttering in her palm and the soft fur were utterly endearing.
“So cute…”
Even adult deer were adorable, but this baby deer was so precious she felt like nibbling it.
As Floria whispered this, Aidan spoke up.
“If you like that deer, you can have it.”
“…Me?”
“You said you liked deer.”
It wasn’t so much that she liked them, more that she found them fascinating.
“If we release it back into the forest, it’ll likely die.
Do as you wish—either return it to the forest or raise it yourself.”
“I’ll raise it!”
Before she could even process her thoughts, Floria blurted out.
“I’ll raise it.”
The deer was so small it barely reached from her hand to her elbow.
It still smelled of milk, indicating it was a nursing fawn.
Such a young creature, unable to eat grass yet, would surely die if returned to the forest.
And the forest…
It’s dangerous.
She couldn’t leave such a vulnerable fawn in a perilous forest.
“Is it really okay?”
“Whatever you wish, my lady.”
Aidan murmured as he removed his clothes.
“It’s so young; you can raise it inside the castle.
There should be a place in the stable where we used to raise foals.
You can keep it there.”
Perhaps it missed the warmth of someone’s embrace, as the deer nestled into her chest.
It was irresistibly cute.
Nodding at Aidan’s words, Floria hugged the baby deer tightly.
It had been a while since Floria had been around.
From the moment he entered the castle, Aidan had thrown off his military gear and strode straight to the bedroom.
It was late, and Floria might have been asleep, but he needed her immediately.
He had missed her.
After being away for so long, he yearned for her body.
He wanted to steal her lips, her gaze.
The moment he stepped into the house, he wanted to embrace her and feel her soft skin.
But…
“So, this is how it ends.”
On the bed, Floria was curled up, holding a wriggling bundle of brown fluff.
He had lost his spot to a baby deer.
Perhaps frightened by the unfamiliar surroundings, the deer had been crying out, “Pii, pii!”
Floria had comforted and soothed it in her arms, and eventually, both had fallen asleep on the bed.
The fawn, which had been crying, was now making soft snuffling noises, deeply asleep.
Watching them, a twisted smile appeared on Aidan’s lips.
“It can’t be helped.”
Just as Floria had gently stroked the fawn, Aidan raised his large hand and brushed Floria’s sleeping head.
It was a tender and warm touch.
Floria let out a soft sigh as she gazed out the window.
A letter had arrived from her mother.
It was an unexpected contact.
Over a month had passed since she arrived here, yet there had been no inquiries from her homeland, Altomole, about her safe arrival or how the wedding had gone.
One would think they’d be curious about their daughter who had traveled to a distant country.
But there had been no news from either her father or mother.
“It’s not like I was waiting for it…”
Even as she murmured this, her hands eagerly opened the letter.
Finally, it had come.
An involuntary smile formed at the corners of her mouth.
As she unfolded the white paper, her mother’s familiar handwriting came into view.
[To Floria,
Altomole is entering its hottest season.
I’ve heard that the Principality of Sieff is in the north and has a cooler climate.
Would it be alright if Helia and I visited?
Please reply soon.]
