Chapter 37
“Then… what should I do?”
“I don’t know what can be done right now. If you go through the awakening process, your body might improve, but I’m not certain. It could even get worse.”
“That sounds difficult.”
“However, that’s not what’s important right now. There’s a more pressing matter.”
Ja-hyun stared into the prince’s eyes. Through the light streaming in from the doorway, he could see the prince’s amethyst irises contracting with excitement, glittering like jewels. It seemed they were finally getting to the heart of the matter.
“What is it?”
“If… someone other than me knows the true nature of the power that Lord Raijin possesses… Wouldn’t there be those who covet that power? This isn’t mere speculation. I’ve seen it with these eyes. Someone killing you and stealing your power.”
A sense of déjà vu washed over him. The prince was speaking as if assuming he wouldn’t know about this, but it was something he was already painfully familiar with.
The prince spoke as if he had witnessed through prophetic eyes what was merely a rumor circulating among the upper class. Ja-hyun could guess what the prince wanted, spreading such lies.
“I don’t want power originating from the imperial family falling into the wrong hands. That’s why I’m offering to help you. With luck, you might safely awaken that power and regain your health. And I, in turn, can secure the empire’s future.”
‘Look at this bastard.’
Though the prince spoke as if referring to some third party, it was clear. As expected, his target wasn’t Ja-hyun himself but his older brother. He was probably hiding his true target and testing for reactions, knowing there would be resistance if he revealed everything now.
Ja-hyun thought of his brother, who was likely inspecting and moving the items that had been in the carriage. Considerable time had passed; he might have returned to the reception room looking for him. He was probably angry, thinking Ja-hyun had disappeared again after being left alone briefly.
Should he agree for now, return, and tell his brother about what this man had said?
That might be one approach. If his brother was properly… if he had his memories, Ja-hyun would have told him everything. But telling such things to his brother in his current state would surely only result in stricter surveillance.
“If the one who seeks to steal your power becomes a threat to the future of the empire and the continent, wouldn’t it be best to eliminate them preemptively with your help? Don’t you think so?”
The prince who had died in the previous cycle, beheaded by his sister. Since he claimed to see the future, perhaps he had seen his own death. Though his exact thoughts weren’t clear yet, maybe the prince was desperately trying to survive.
“Are you saying you’ll save me from death?”
From what he could tell, the prince wasn’t a complete fool. Sharing such detailed information with someone who wasn’t yet close to him couldn’t have been entirely thoughtless.
He probably anticipated that Ja-hyun would run to his brother, the Grand Duke, and spill everything. Either way, if it created a rift between the Grand Duke and Ja-hyun, the Grand Duke might approach the prince first to make a deal. It was quite a decent strategy.
But that would only work if he were truly an ignorant, sickly shut-in who knew nothing. Now it was just absurd and laughable.
He wasn’t angry at all.
Which meant there was absolutely no need to worry about this bastard talking about killing his brother or whatever.
This was just roleplaying after all, and his brother’s role was merely virtually assigned, so it wouldn’t matter even if his brother suffered a little damage.
He wasn’t sure whether his brother’s role here was meant to be villainous or virtuous, or if he was just in political opposition to the prince. But even if it was a villainous role, it wouldn’t hurt anything. As long as the objective was achieved, any direction would do.
So there was absolutely no need to worry about that bastard trying to mess with his brother. Even without proper memories, his brother wasn’t someone who would fall for such things easily. There was no need to get angry or respond emotionally.
If someone had touched his real brother instead of this fake role-playing version, he wouldn’t have stayed quiet. Contract or whatever be damned, he would have dragged his main body into this world somehow. Since this world was still incomplete, if he manifested as a complete god of a perfect world, he would probably turn not just that bastard, but the entire continent into a wasteland.
But his brother’s form here was just a shell for a role-play. If he threw a fit because someone messed with his brother here, it would be truly pathetic. It would be as ridiculous as driving a Maserati to a PC bang for a physical fight because someone stole your item in a cute RPG game with 2-head-tall pixel characters.
Anyway, there was no reason for such drama. No need at all.
