Chapter 38
“Very well. I’ll help you.”
Perhaps sensing that Ja-hyun had given in, the prince’s voice carried unnecessary weight.
“……”
To Kwon Ja-hyun, his brother was an incredibly precious person, someone who couldn’t be explained merely through familial or romantic affection.
He wasn’t a good person. He didn’t strive for unnecessary goodness, nor was he the type to act because something was right. Moreover, if someone he just met today tried to use him, he had no intention of giving them any consideration, even if they had some unspeakable past and were acting with good intentions.
To put it negatively, he was materialistic; to put it kindly, he simply minded his own business.
In the original world, he was a hero. But he couldn’t even jokingly say he possessed heroic qualities. At first, he had acted seeking an easy future with fame and wealth, a life of admiration – that sort of thing.
It wasn’t that he disliked physical work. He just believed that if you had the strongest power, it was better to step in directly and end situations quickly – just that much. But he wouldn’t do anything beyond that.
If it was impossible to punish those who irritated him based on personal feelings while saving everyone, it was better to make cold judgments and act rationally. Good and evil, right and wrong were merely secondary concerns.
If there ever came a day when he prioritized good and evil, it wouldn’t be because it was right, but simply because he didn’t want to lose his place to belong.
If he saved people and tried to solve everything even at the cost of his body, it was purely out of selfishness. That was true before and remains true now.
After all, being king of a ruined world wouldn’t be any fun.
Things are a bit different now. He wanted to maintain the world his brother had worked so hard to create for him, and if possible, make it into a more stable and peaceful world that would last longer. That’s why he was going through all this trouble now.
Still, it would be hard to say these actions stemmed from any noble altruism.
That’s the kind of person he was.
If… he had to choose between the world and his brother,
He would choose his brother without a second thought.
Even with millions of people on the scale, he would choose just that one person.
A proper hero to the bone would probably choose something more righteous. But he wasn’t like that. He never had been and never would be.
“To think I have a power I don’t even know about, and someone is trying to kill me for it… It’s frightening just hearing about it.”
The prince smiled with satisfaction at that response. He seemed to think his words had gotten through. But Ja-hyun continued in a hesitant tone.
“However, I trust you understand that it’s difficult to immediately trust your words, Your Highness. I’m still confused… It’s hard to believe.”
“I understand. Anyone would think that way hearing such things. But…”
Ja-hyun cut off the prince’s words and addressed him with formal titles.
“Third Prince Ezekiel Benedict Viestra. So this time, let me make a proposal.”
[Warning! This behavior contradicts the ‘Character Settings’.]
For smooth progress, it would be convenient to recruit troublesome figures in advance. He wasn’t planning to set a trap and dispose of him right away. Still, it would be far better to make him compliant.
He’d make a good intermediate bridge to approach the ‘warmonger’ who would negatively impact this world’s future. Besides, since he was destined to die anyway, he could even serve as a useful shield if needed.
Again, he wasn’t angry at all.
Ja-hyun opened his mouth, mimicking a slow and gentle tone.
“Would you like to make a contract with me?”
As he said this, he met Third Prince Ezekiel’s eyes and smiled.
