Chapter 190
“No, I’m fine.”
Contrary to her words, her voice—completely not fine at all—tickled his chest like water lily petals floating and swaying on water. Cassis reached out and gently grasped her collar, and unlike what he could see, he realized that her physical condition wasn’t actually that bad.
Then why. Could it be that she had become uncomfortable with the situation of facing him?
Having realized this remarkably quickly, instead of letting out a hollow laugh, he lifted Evelyn into his arms. At his touch, as gentle as if he were cradling a newborn animal, Evelyn’s eyes blinked rapidly.
“I’ll take you.”
Without revealing the various emotions stirring in his heart, he left only this perfunctory announcement and began walking. Behind him, invisible to Evelyn’s eyes but visible to him, pale blue spirits were properly carrying the orange tree pot toward the pavilion.
And so Evelyn, who believed she was being kicked out of the Hall of Glory by him, became quite sad and began to make her lips quiver as if she were about to cry.
If I had known this would happen, I should have at least properly worn the dress I took such care to choose earlier. I should have shown Lord Cassis a smiling face one last time, but instead he saw me drooling in the corner of my mouth from sleeping…. Huhu?
It was then. He, who had been heading straight for the entrance of the Hall of Glory, suddenly turned around and began climbing the stairs to the second floor. Since Evelyn had thought she was being kicked out without question, she struggled and asked.
“Where are you going?”
No, surely…! He wasn’t going to put her on the second-floor terrace railing and tell her to get out from there on her own, was he?! She didn’t have the skill to climb down the wall!
Having imagined something both absurd and frightening, she began to tremble, but Cassis glanced down at her and spoke quietly.
“Didn’t I say we were going to find a place to put your pot?”
“I… wasn’t I being kicked out?”
“What kicked out?”
“Oh nothing”
His footsteps climbing the stairs came to an abrupt halt. The spirits following closely behind couldn’t stop in time, and when the orange tree pot touched his back, the lush green leaves rustled as they bumped against each other. As if proving Iel’s words that it had grown well, not a single leaf fell weakly from among them.
Even in the dark place without lighting, his blue eyes gazed down intently, and Evelyn couldn’t hide anything, spilling out all her inner thoughts.
“Lately, I felt like I kept clashing with Lord Cassis, and it seemed like I had done something terribly wrong. I thought maybe I would be living somewhere else where I could keep and tend to the pot, rather than in the Hall of Glory.”
He, who had been watching her continuously while she spoke, immediately answered.
“Your quarters are here and there’s no reason for that to change. If I were to lay down the crown, then you would leave the Hall of Glory together with me. Well, does that answer it now?”
“Then am I going to the second floor?”
“Yes. It’s not right away, so since you’re out today anyway, look around and choose a spot to put your pot.”
So I’m not completely separating from him. There’s still time to say goodbye. Ah, thank goodness. I wasn’t being permanently kicked out of the Hall of Glory!
While recognizing that this was a situation where she should feel tremendously relieved, she couldn’t help but feel a slight sense of disappointment washing over her. Until now, if she waited, he would eventually return to the bedroom, but from now on, with the floors separated, she would have to consider the possibility of not seeing him unless she made an effort to do so deliberately.
‘I need to cheer up. It’s not a complete farewell, so this is still something, isn’t it?’
Before Evelyn could blame her own calculating heart, she was set in motion again by his strength. Having passed the study that had become the beginning of tragedy when she had come up with Luba, she was soon set down in front of an unfamiliar door.
“Open it yourself.”
Cassis’s words urging her from behind held a strange vitality. Not noticing this, Evelyn grasped the door handle, opened it, and parted her lips.
“Ah…?”
It was remarkably different from the vague imagination she had conjured up. The four walls of this room were covered with wallpaper in calm tones, and as if trying to fill every empty space, various display cabinets and ceramics, paintings, and tables and chairs painted in deep brown tones were properly arranged. No matter where she looked, it was far from being an abandoned corner room.
‘Wasn’t he just giving me an empty room? It’s too big and splendid.’
As the bewildered Evelyn just stood there staring blankly, Cassis behind her asked quietly.
“Don’t you like it?”
“Huh…? Oh, no. Am I going to be staying in this room from now on?”
Her voice, asking the same thing several times, overflowed with doubt. Unable to tell whether she liked it or not, he embraced her from behind.
“That’s right. If you don’t like it, just say so honestly. Cleaning out this interior and filling it anew with your tastes would be nothing at all.”
Only then realizing that Cassis had decorated this place just for her, Evelyn turned around to face him. Behind his back, branches with leaves from the orange tree that Iel had given were also faintly visible, but the only one filling her vision right now was Cassis.
