“Let’s wait for now.”

“Yes, sir.”

The coachman, who had received generous tips along with payment for the horse and carriage fare from the tall knight, acted leisurely. Seeing that someone was coming frantically, apparently needing this carriage, he felt like he might receive another fee for his trouble if things went well.

His premonition was right. The village chief, who had run until he was breathless, grabbed the carriage door handle and spoke urgently.

“Does this carriage go to Dendra village? If there’s an empty seat, I’d like to ask to share the ride. There’s a child who fell from a tree and injured his leg, but suddenly he’s developed a fever and his condition has worsened… huk, heok.”

“Oh my!”

Instead of Evelyn, who was shocked by the unexpected situation, Cassis stepped forward.

“Coachman, if you take that child to Dendra immediately, I’ll pay you as much again as what you received earlier.”

“Oh my, I’d be grateful for that. Of course I’ll take him, so bring the child. Uh… since you said it’s a child with a hurt leg, he can’t walk here, can he?”

When the coachman started to beam but then worried about the patient, the village chief caught his rough breath.

“Huu, huuu. Thank you. I’ll bring the child from over there…”

“Now, now. What’s there to worry about when we have a perfectly good carriage? We just need to go in front of that house.”

Cassis told the urgent-looking village chief to climb up to the driver’s seat together and depart quickly, then began walking alongside her to follow behind. When Evelyn tried to hurry and run out of worry, he grabbed her arm several times to stop her.

“You need to stay calm, Miss Lena. You’ll end up falling the same way.”

“…Yes.”

She was reflecting a little as she heard him clearly pronounce her pseudonym. Because earlier, in her urgent state of mind, she had almost shouted loudly, “What should we do, Lord Cassis!” Regardless of Miss Lena or whatever. Even the wind brushing against their hair felt bothersome given the situation.

“If it’s not an arm but a leg injury, it would be uncomfortable to walk, so it makes sense to stop any departing carriage regardless of its destination. It’s good that we came here.”

“I hope he gets treated quickly….”

Though they didn’t run, they walked briskly and arrived in front of the house where the carriage had stopped. The village chief, who had gone inside, was coming out carrying and comforting a small child who looked to be only five or six years old.

“Hwaang!”

“It’s alright, child. Let’s ride this carriage to the big village and get you examined.”

While the village chief was helping the child and the child’s mother into the carriage, when the coachman tried to separate the horse as promised, Cassis stopped him.

“Just leave it. It would be better to add the horse and take them quickly instead.”

“Are you two visiting our village?”

Even amid the chaos, when the village chief calmly asked, Evelyn finally stepped forward to answer.

“Yes. Originally we had bought one horse that pulled this carriage separately, and we were planning to look around the area during the day and move to another place in the evening to stay or camp out….”

“It’s fine, just take them. We’ll manage on our own.”

The village chief looked back and forth between the man who appeared to be a knight showing courteous consideration and the woman who seemed tender-hearted, then bowed his head.

“It’s humble, but could you please stay the night at our house?”

“Pardon?”

“I need to see how the child’s treatment goes, so I don’t think I can return today. If you wait just one day, I’ll definitely come back to greet you and express my gratitude. There’s also a house nearby where my daughter Faye lives, and I can call her to ask about meals. My wife happens to be away for a few days, so that place is an empty house with no one there.”

“Understood. The child is urgent, so please go ahead.”

“Please definitely wait for us, I beg you!”

After the village chief earnestly requested and climbed up to the driver’s seat, the carriage returned the way it came without delay. Seeing the back wheels rattling as they hurried away, Evelyn sighed.

“I hope he’ll be safe…. With both an injured leg and a fever, how scared that child must have been.”

“Aren’t you disappointed? The person you wanted to see left without even looking at your face for a moment.”

When he asked in a low voice, a fresh smile spread across Evelyn’s face.

“No! It was good because it was just like the village chief. Isn’t that exactly like someone who took care of me till the end even though I don’t share a drop of blood with him?”

“I see.”

“By the way, would it be okay if we left a day later? If the schedule changes, Lord Laocon will be very worried.”

Iel and Laocon were certainly different—while Iel’s neck veins would bulge when opposing matters, his excitement was less intense. At Evelyn’s reasonable concern, he chuckled.

“He’ll be less shocked because of the great flood incident from last time, so you can put him out of your mind. This time it’s just one day, not several days, so it’s fine.”

“Yes?!”

“And these days Laocon is living quite happily, so it’s okay.”

“…That’s true.”
