Chapter 79
“Th-this…!”
The eyes of the elf who was about to press her foot down on Evelyn’s neck widened in surprise. The person rushing over from a distance was the knight Iel, renowned for receiving the greatest trust from the king.
‘I need to run!’
The attacker had no good options. Unlike with other elves, if she were seen doing wrong by the closest aide to the great King Cassis, not only would there be no covering up this situation, but everything would be over, so her identity couldn’t be revealed.
The elf made a quick decision, turned and fled without hesitation, leaving the arrow embedded in the ground with no time to retrieve it. Yet inwardly, she felt deeply wronged by the situation.
‘It’s only natural for an elf to discipline and punish a lowly, wicked nymph who misbehaves. Moreover, where is this? The sanctuary! A precious sanctuary newly created and adorned by elves. Isn’t discipline only appropriate when a foolish nymph like her covets such a place?’
The attacker, who was among the elves with a particularly strong dislike for nymphs, gnashed her teeth.
Even Nike who had stayed in Jupiter for ages was terribly disliked, but this newly appeared nymph… Without a doubt. She must be that nymph everyone mentioned with annoyance and disgust after returning to the castle from their sentry duties.
‘A despicable nymph clinging to His Majesty the King who is already incredibly busy. I can’t leave her be. I must deal with her somehow…!’
She couldn’t kill her today, but there would be another opportunity.
As the elf who shot the arrow hastily fled, Iel, who had witnessed the terrible scene and rushed over in alarm, shouted.
“Don’t think we won’t find you, stop! Otherwise, you’ll feel my sword in your back!”
“Enough, Iel. Evelyn? Evelyn, are you alright?”
Cassis, who had been running behind Iel, suddenly overtook him and reached her as she convulsed. Finally, he hurriedly tried to support Evelyn who had collapsed on the ground and was choking, but hesitated.
Her throat, irregularly emitting metallic sounds and noises like air escaping from a flute, was alarming—as if her ribs had been broken and pierced her lungs. The white dress she wore was chaotically marked with numerous traces of being scraped by the bottom of shoes, and her condition was clearly terrible. He calmly called her name again.
“Evelyn?”
“Gh, ghurk…”
The focus of her pupils was unclear and blurry. On her right cheek, there was a clear red mark, perhaps from a severe slap, and her lips were torn in several places with thin lines of fresh blood filling the cuts. Her wheezing breath was becoming weaker, which was concerning.
Above all, Evelyn couldn’t straighten her slender waist, which was bent like a shrimp. In short, her body and mind were visibly crumbling even as he watched.
‘In such a short time, they beat her quite thoroughly.’
Despicable bastard!
He could clearly feel anger rising like smoke, but Cassis suppressed his heated emotions, preventing his feelings from coalescing into hatred. Acting on emotion would only expose weaknesses to the opponent, making it useless. As a knight, he knew this fact better than anyone.
Violence could not be used freely within the castle.
Even permitted knights or guards could not handle swords, bows, or any blades that might harm others carelessly, and all practice was only allowed in the training grounds. Though there were exceptions for intruders. That person had boldly broken the long-standing, solid rule.
While he was walking and talking briefly with Iel, he heard the subtle sound of an arrow flying and rushed over urgently, only to find this tragedy.
“Evelyn…”
In this grim situation, the best action he could take was determined by fate.
From his palm, the greenish essence of the World Tree flowed out and gradually seeped into Evelyn’s limp body. He could sense her body, which had been weakly coughing and trembling with convulsions, slowly beginning to stabilize.
Her breathing, which had made his fingertips tremble with anxiety, was returning from a wheezing sound to its original clear and stable state.
Recovery would be slow. He couldn’t let his guard down just because her breathing improved, as she was both a nymph and possessed human aspects. He sat down heavily on the floor, placing Evelyn’s head on his thigh, and immediately read even the flow of her blood.
Fortunately, at least her blood circulation was flowing smoothly. If that’s the case… on to the next step.
“Your Majesty…”
“Shh.”
