Chapter 104
Creaaak—
At that moment, one of the doors slowly creaked open.
Come to think of it, they hadn’t yet checked inside the room. Roina stepped closer, intending to inspect it first. The house was quite small, with only a single bedroom. However, because it was well-organized, it didn’t feel cramped or suffocating.
Just as Roina reached for the doorknob, Maili suddenly stopped her.
“I’ll open it. If something jumps out, it’ll be dangerous for you.”
She had a point. Roina obediently let Maili take the handle.
Creeeak—
The hinges let out a faint sound, likely from age, but the door opened without resistance.
Inside, there was a modest yet tidy bed, a wardrobe, a desk, and a bookshelf—small but filled with well-worn books.
And on the bed, a woman lay fast asleep, her face serene.
Roina and Maili hesitated momentarily at the sight but soon stepped closer to examine her.
Her expression was peaceful, yet her complexion was pale, and she was overall so thin that she didn’t appear healthy.
Even so, she was beautiful.
“…….”
“Is she the owner of this cabin?”
“Yeah, probably.”
For some reason, she exuded an aura that compelled them to stop and simply look at her.
Roina remained silent.
Was this the person Luda had wanted to save?
Though they hadn’t spoken to her, the state of the house suggested that she must have been a good person. If Roina had seen her awake, speaking and moving in good health, perhaps even she would have wanted to save her.
Both of them instinctively grew solemn.
Though the woman was merely asleep, her faint breathing and bloodless complexion gave her the appearance of a corpse at first glance. If she were to remain in this state forever, would that not be the same as being dead?
Perhaps, in that sense, the world’s nickname for this place—a grave—was all too fitting.
After a brief silence, Roina examined the magic entwined around the woman.
As expected, she sensed the same flow of temporal magic as before.
If Quies’s words earlier were true, dispelling this magic would return her to a state where she would be left waiting for death, tormented by illness.
For now, Roina left the spell untouched.
On the desk, there was a notebook.
It had been on her mind for some time now, so she reached for it and picked it up.
Opening it at random, she found a date written inside.
{ Imperial Year 578, March 18. }
It was someone’s diary.
She flipped the notebook over to check the back cover.
Unlike the front, which had nothing written on it, there was a name inscribed there.
{ Diana Conwell }
Diana Conwell…
Most likely, the woman lying in that bed was the owner of this name.
Roina turned the book over again and resumed reading the page she had been looking at earlier.
{ Imperial Year 578, March 18. }
The weather isn’t bad. Winter is passing, and soon, spring will arrive with its budding sprouts.
Today, I offered my gratitude to the goddess for granting the world another year of rest.
Without winter, perhaps spring would not feel so precious.
Rager once again pestered me today, begging to raise a puppy.
How many more of the goddess’s blessed winters must pass before he matures enough to feel at ease? }
“…The goddess.”
The goddess was mentioned here as well.
Imperial Year 578 was more than four centuries ago, yet this diary was far too pristine to be so old.
Just then, from outside the room—at the entrance of the cabin—came a loud commotion.
Crash! Bang! Thud!
It seemed Quies had returned.
Startled, Roina quickly tucked the notebook into her coat and stood up.
