Chapter 110
Quies led Roina to a secluded spot, away from prying eyes. From there, they naturally had a clear view of the Goddess’s Cliff. The cliff was now slowly crumbling, emitting deep rumbling sounds—kuuu-rung, kurung—as it collapsed bit by bit.
“Huuuh. Master, the thing is….”
Quies’s face was flushed red, as if she were about to burst into tears. She struggled to hold them back as she spoke.
“Hic, sob… I, I think I’ve done something terribly wrong.”
“…You’ve reflected on it and realized your mistakes.”
“Well done. This is how you grow.”
Roina smiled faintly as she said this, and Quies’s sobbing only intensified in response.
“Huuk, hic, Ru… Ruda, sob, I took away his chance to grow on his own. Huuuh… and I stole years of people’s lives. Waaaah, sob.”
Tears welled up and streamed down her cheeks. Compared to how she had refused to acknowledge her faults earlier, this was a stark transformation.
Roina reaffirmed that Quies was not truly a wicked being. The fact that she had learned, even in this painful way, was a relief. Though the lives of far too many had been ruined, making it impossible to turn back time—
At the very least, she was now repenting. Slowly but surely, she would be able to atone. And she would never repeat the same mistake again.
That alone made Roina feel just a little lighter.
“I’ll never, ever use my powers recklessly on people again, waaaah! Uwaaah, Master, I’m so ashamed, huuuuh—!”
Like a child who had deeply realized her mistakes and was reciting a letter of repentance, Quies listed out her sins one by one. But whether it was due to overwhelming guilt or unbearable shame, in the end, she broke down into loud sobs.
“I, I sh-shouldn’t be crying, hhic, b-but waaaah!”
Even if she cried like this, Rager wouldn’t come back.
That was what Quies truly wanted to say.
The heaviest weight in her heart, the greatest guilt consuming her, was him.
The first contractor and familiar she had selfishly kept by her side out of pure greed.
That Rager had suffered in vain for hundreds of years because of her—only to now die so meaninglessly, without ever getting the chance to live a brilliant life of his own.
