Chapter 90
Following Maili’s instructions to conserve her strength for the night, Roina quietly returned to the lord’s castle. However, staying completely idle didn’t sit well with her, so she made her way to the back garden and cautiously began channeling her magic.
She was gathering the snow piled in the garden to craft spears of ice. Since snow and ice weren’t commonly seen in the Mage Tower, the sensation felt somewhat unfamiliar. The elemental forces obeyed her will, but the speed at which they responded varied significantly depending on how she structured their path. It was similar to how mental arithmetic was slower when relying only on basic operations, whereas solving a problem using proper equations yielded much faster results.
Just then, the air around her stilled, and a warm breeze enveloped her.
“It’s cold out here, Roina.”
It was Lutan. He spoke as he draped a blanket over her shoulders. The warmth of the fabric wrapped around her like a cloak, and with her still inside it, Lutan pulled her into his embrace.
Flinch. The heat of his lips pressing against her cheek was sudden, almost startling. Perhaps it was because her skin had numbed from the cold outside. Only then did she realize just how chilled she had become. She relaxed into him, resting her head against the Great Archmage.
Lutan was much taller than she was, making it easy for him to support her.
“You’re warm… Thank you, Lutan.”
Lutan pressed a kiss to the crown of her head. The gesture was reverent, as though he were cherishing something precious. It was almost sorrowful to watch.
Feeling a pang of sympathy, Roina lifted her hands and cupped his cheek.
This time, she rose onto her toes and placed a kiss against his chin.
A moment later, Lutan bent down, and their lips met.
