Chapter 144
Though Psyche said she would forgive him, he couldn’t forgive himself. Serdin took several deep breaths against the suffocating agony, then carefully slipped out of bed. Now wasn’t the time to writhe in self-reproach. He had promised to protect her, and it was time to put that promise into action.
Rezus didn’t even turn when Serdin entered the study. He simply stood with his arms crossed, facing the window, seemingly lost in thought.
“……You said you would protect Psyche if she betrayed Mathes.”
Rezus showed no reaction. But Serdin knew he was listening carefully to his words. He had probably overheard all the conversations with Psyche until now. Despite appearances, Rezus also had feelings for Psyche.
“To Psyche, Mathes is her life itself. Planning to completely destroy her life while promising to protect her is a contradiction. If that promise was sincere, you must also protect Mathes that she loves.”
A few days ago, Helios had informed them that through his foresight, one of his main abilities, he had seen Arje’s victory. Since Helios’s foresight had never been wrong, the possibility of that future changing was slim.
‘When we win the war, display the heads of Mathes’s family leaders at the city gates and seize all their territories and assets.’
This had been decided long before Helios saw the future. And now Serdin was asking to reverse that decision.
“I’m not saying we should leave Mathes’s family heads alone. I mean, even if we kill them, we shouldn’t display their heads. Or sending them into exile instead of killing them could be another option. And we can pass down their family leadership to their collateral bloodlines.”
Only because of Psyche. Because she would be sad if the Mathes she loved disappeared. For that reason alone, Serdin was essentially suggesting they throw away the perfect opportunity to take over Mathes.
“The Rosebel family has not only Zephyros but also Psyche, so if she wants, Psyche could inherit the family leadership. If we show such mercy after winning the war, perhaps we could achieve harmony with Mathes for the first time. Anyway, the collateral bloodlines would be weaker than us, and Psyche too……,”
“I’ve been listening quietly, but this really is endless.”
That’s when Rezus finally spoke.
“Blinded by a woman.”
Rezus slowly turned around. His lips curved in a sneer.
“Your head is a flower garden, truly.”
A chilling silence fell over the room. A killing intent so strong it made the skin tingle shot toward Serdin. Serdin clenched his fists tightly before speaking in a suppressed voice.
“……She might be pregnant.”
“So what?”
“Ha……. F**k, if you have any conscience……!”
At that moment, Rezus approached with a speed invisible to the eye and grabbed Serdin’s head forcefully.
“Shut it.”
Serdin gritted his teeth. He had the intuition that with one wrong move here, Rezus would use his privilege as leader. If his ability was restricted, he could do nothing. F**k. Just as Serdin was cursing inwardly.
“Before I smash your head.”
Whether he truly meant to do it or not, Serdin felt as if his head was being crushed. Feeling his life threatened, Serdin tried to break free from Rezus’s grip regardless of ability restriction, but Rezus released him even faster.
After throwing Serdin’s head aside, Rezus frowned and simply walked past him, leaving the study altogether. It was because he sensed someone entering Psyche’s room.
“Ha…….”
Serdin glared at Rezus’s retreating figure, then irritably wiped his face. It was pathetic. His position of having to seek permission from Rezus, the leader, for everything he wanted to do.
He left the study, leaving behind the bitter taste of defeat and humiliation. For now, he needed to go to her room. For some reason, everyone except him had gathered there.
Serdin narrowed his brows at the scene unfolding in Psyche’s bedroom. Helios was pouring his healing ability over Psyche, who was moaning painfully in her sleep, while Terche was inserting a needle into the inside of her arm. Judging by the bandages and IV stand hanging next to Terche, it seemed he was trying to inject nutrients into Psyche’s body.
“What are you doing?”
In the commotion, Rezus was the first to speak. Since Psyche was already surrounded by a protective barrier, there was no chance of her waking from the sound.
“Isn’t it obvious?”
The answer came only from Terche. Helios merely shrugged his shoulders while wearing a secretive smile. Pure white light continued to pour from Helios’s hands.
Rezus quietly observed this before turning his gaze to Terche. Terche, receiving the expressionless look demanding a more detailed explanation, answered in a flat voice.
“There’s a limit to healing abilities. She keeps withering away, so we need to supply nutrients like this.”
It wasn’t wrong, but it was irritating. Rezus firmly shut his mouth and brushed his bangs up. He stared almost glaring at the men gathered around Psyche, then, after confirming that the nutrients were flowing properly into her body, he ordered all three to leave.
“Everyone out.”
Sensing that their abilities would be restricted if they disobeyed, the three left the room without a word.
Rezus silently stared at Psyche’s face for a long time even after they had all gone. As if having a nightmare, her delicate features were furrowed, and soft moans escaped through her pink lips.
A curse flowed between his teeth briefly, then he lifted the blanket and entered the bed. It was an uncharacteristically careful movement for him.
