Chapter XIV. Transform
Something was different.
That was her first thought upon waking. The headache that had plagued her was gone as if it had never existed, her mind was clear, and her entire body felt light and refreshed.
She immediately sensed that her ability would manifest soon, and that intuition wasn’t wrong.
It happened while Serdin had left to shower. Her heart began to pound. As she felt a strange sensation and raised her upper body, a faint power bloomed within her chest, and in an instant, that power grew like a snowball.
Reflexively clutching her chest and curling her body, this enormous power—unlike anything she had experienced before—slowly spread from her heart to her head, fingertips, and toes, reaching every corner of her being. Though no one had told her, she instinctively understood that this was the process of her ability manifesting.
Her heart beat increasingly harder. Elation and fear rose simultaneously. The power coursing through her body was exhilarating yet unfamiliar.
Thump-thump-thump-thump. She opened her eyes wide. Suddenly, all sensations became familiar. Like a great wave washing over her entire body and then receding like the tide, everything suddenly became calm.
Psyche stared blankly at her two hands. They were still trembling from the aftermath of her ability manifesting.
‘Finally……’
As she tightly closed her eyes, everything that had happened since being kidnapped by the Arje family heads flashed before her like a film reel. Sorrow, a sense of liberation, or perhaps profound emotion. A jumble of feelings that couldn’t be defined as just one swept over her chaotically.
At that moment, the door swung open abruptly. Her eyes met those of Helios, who had just opened the door. Gradually, the man’s violet pupils widened. It was because of the scene unfolding before his eyes.
In the middle of a ruined ancient castle, Rezus was staring into space with empty eyes. His expression seemed like one longing for someone.
The next moment, he saw Terche standing still in front of a massive castle gate, staring fixedly at one spot. Then, an image of himself appeared, obsessively chasing after someone.
All these scenes appeared and disappeared before Helios’s eyes in less than a second. Just as he comprehended the meaning of these scenes and gave a wry smile, Serdin hurriedly entered the room. The instant Psyche and Serdin’s gazes collided, another future unfolded before Helios’s eyes.
It was a scene of Serdin and Psyche in a space where only the two of them existed, their cheeks pressed together, smiling brightly.
“Psyche……!”
An intense jealousy and anger beyond his own understanding enveloped Helios. He used his primary ability of restraint to immobilize Serdin as he tried to approach Psyche.
“You, what the f**k do you think you’re doing!”
Though the duration wouldn’t last even ten seconds since their powers were evenly matched, it didn’t matter. If he could avoid seeing Serdin and Psyche together for even just ten seconds, he was willing to use this power over and over.
“Ha……, I clearly warned you to act fairly, but why won’t you listen, Phrena.”
Helios rubbed his face dry as he muttered.
“Do you perhaps want to be chased by us? Hm? Being forcibly taken, being chased…… Do you enjoy that sort of thing?”
Just as a dangerous light swirled in Helios’s eyes, Rezus and Terche also entered the room. They seemed to have rushed in after hearing the commotion. At the same time, as Serdin, now released from restraint, tried to approach Psyche, she raised a thick barrier around herself and shouted sharply.
“Don’t come near me!”
“……Psyche?”
Serdin hesitated. But Rezus paid no mind and approached Psyche with quick steps. Then he struck the barrier with his bare hand—Bang!
She flinched momentarily, but soon became calm after confirming that Rezus couldn’t break through the barrier. Rezus, too, was just as calm as Psyche. As if he hadn’t even expected it to break through immediately.
He tilted his head indifferently and commanded the other family heads authoritatively.
“What are you doing? Break through it.”
“……You’re the worst until the very end, aren’t you.”
“I’ve always been the worst to you, Psyche.”
Bang! He struck the barrier once more without a change in expression while murmuring. After repeating this a few more times, the barrier that had seemed impenetrable began to crack with a sizzling sound.
“Why are you all standing there like idiots? Are your feet stuck to the ground? I said break through it.”
“……Rezus, if you feel any guilt toward me at all.”
Crash! With one more powerful strike, the cracks began to split in multiple directions. Just before Rezus could swing his fist again.
“Please don’t start a war.”
Simultaneously with her firm voice dropping, she disappeared. As if she had never been there to begin with.
