Chapter 160
* * *
Summer had passed, and it was autumn before she knew it.
It would take a little more time to fully adapt as the owner of Rosebel and the head of Mathes, but at least now she didn’t have to stay up all night because of work, and she had gained the leisure to look around her.
To the extent that she judged it was okay to see Zephyros Rosebel now.
“…….”
After finishing her preparations, Psyche quietly looked into the mirror. She was neither glamorously nor plainly dressed, but appropriately adorned.
A heavy sigh escaped her at the thought of seeing Zephyros Rosebel, but soon she composed her expression as if nothing had happened.
When she teleported, thick sand swept before her eyes. The blazing sunlight beat down intensely as if it would burn her entire body. The sands, as red as the sun, looked like blood, momentarily giving her the illusion of standing in a magnificent sea of blood.
‘Suffocating.’
It hadn’t even been a minute since she arrived, but she felt like she might asphyxiate at any moment. Psyche quickly surrounded herself with a protective barrier. Only then could she breathe freely. She slowly looked around.
An endless vastness that seemed like it had turned into a handful of dust. Air so hot and dry that it felt gloomy.
Zephyros Rosebel’s place of exile was a ‘desert.’
She shaded her eyes with her hand and quietly gazed at the mud house about twenty paces away. A mud house built in the middle of the barren desert. That place right there was where Zephyros stayed.
‘It looks better than I expected.’
Since she had only seen it through a crystal ball until now, this was the first time seeing it in person. When she saw it through the crystal ball, it looked like it would collapse at once if it rained, but seeing it in person, it looked quite solid and large.
About 16 square meters, perhaps. For a man who had lived only in mansion-like palaces all his life, he would probably feel like he was suffocating to death. Moreover, outside was a desert, and if he moved more than 500m away from the mud house, he would even be electrocuted, so it would be more strange if he didn’t go mad.
Still, there was a sleeping bag inside, a dining table, a shower room, and relatively good quality food and water were regularly supplied, so she thought this was an extremely merciful treatment.
She twisted her lips crookedly and slowly walked toward the mud house. She couldn’t even guess how broken Zephyros Rosebel would be. Even though she could have seen him through the crystal ball, she deliberately hadn’t looked even once.
For this day.
She stopped in front of a small, blackish door that was hardly distinguishable as a door from a distance. Knock, knock. She knocked on the door, but there was no answer from inside, nor did the door open.
Knock, knock. She knocked on the door once more. Again, there was no response. Eventually, she opened the door herself and stepped inside the room. The door was so small that she had to bend down to enter.
As soon as she went in, a musty and damp smell stung her nose. The smell of rotting food was mixed in too. It was dark all around, and the old blanket spread on the floor was deeply stained as if water had been spilled on it.
‘……I hope he didn’t wet himself.’
She soon erased that thought. No matter how broken Zephyros had become, he probably wouldn’t have gone so far as to wet his blanket. She quietly gazed for a moment at Zephyros, who was pushed against the wall. The room was so narrow that she found him immediately without having to look around.
Zephyros was crouched in the corner, his face deeply buried in his knees. Judging by his irregular breathing, he didn’t seem to be sleeping.
‘He doesn’t even stir when someone comes.’
Did he think it was the person who regularly supplied food and water, and cleaned? Or was he so lethargic that he couldn’t move at all? Whatever the case, Zephyros had become a wreck beyond what she had imagined.
He who always emanated a clean and soft fragrance now only exuded a damp earthy smell and the scent of sweat. His hair was matted, unwashed for who knows how long, and the light brown tunic and cotton pants he wore reminded one of prison clothes. The muscles that had been toned just right seemed to have all disappeared, leaving him skin and bones.
“Zephyros Rosebel.”
When she called his name, his shoulders trembled with a start, and he slowly raised his head. Psyche thoroughly examined his face. It was an unrecognizably gaunt face. It was hard to believe this was really the Zephyros Rosebel she had known.
