Chapter 1.10
“This is the year 987. And the Scourge Valley is a restricted zone.”
“……I see. I must have been mistaken about something.”
I don’t know whether to be glad or disappointed.
If he had regressed, I could have asked him why he did what he did on my execution day.
But if that happened and I ended up connected to Aiden, it might make it difficult to completely cut ties with Ernst.
Let’s just wrap everything up.
“Then would you take your hand off, Mr. Aiden?”
“A-ah. Yes!”
Aiden took his hand, which was still covering the back of mine, away.
The warmth that had been gently embracing me disappeared.……I felt a little disappointed.
I never loved Ernst, but I did like holding his hand. To me, who had lost my family and had no friends, each small physical touch like that was precious.
If I break off the engagement, I’ll never have anyone to hold hands with.
Feeling a little bitter, I paid for the tea.
During that time, Aiden waited beside me…….
For some reason, the clerk kept glancing at Aiden, and Aiden also seemed restless.
I quickly understood why. Every time people entered the tea house, they flinched at the sight of Aiden.
His sharp features and large frame are problems, but the biggest cause is probably the military uniform.
They say in our ancestors’ generation, soldiers fought against humans, but from our grandparents’ generation, the main enemy of soldiers has been monsters, not humans. Fortunately, our generation succeeded in pushing monsters across the border, but……. Still, whenever we rarely see soldiers, it can’t be helped that we flinch, wondering, ‘Did monsters appear nearby?’
I asked Aiden casually.
“Excuse me, Mr. Aiden, don’t you have civilian clothes?”
“……I do have civilian clothes at the main house. So I came back wearing only my uniform, but…….”
He explained with a blush.
“When I tried them on after so long, they were all too tight, so…….”
“…….”
He doesn’t seem to have gained weight.
Looks like his muscle growth isn’t quite finished yet.
Just then, I found a way to apologize to the seamstress whose reservation I had cancelled.
I can find her a new customer, can’t I?
It won’t be as much as the wedding dress, but Aiden is big, so he’ll need a lot of fabric too!
“Mr. Aiden! Why don’t we go back to that clothing shop and get you some civilian clothes? I’ll pay!”
At first, Aiden refused my offer.
“No. Spending extra money on clothes I already have violates the principle of integrity a soldier should possess.”
“And making civilians uneasy just by existing is fine?”
“……I have no separate principle regarding that.”
“If you have no principle, you should choose the better course of action!”
I laughed cheerfully and pulled Aiden along.
The seamstress at the dress shop made a wry face at our return, but soon smiled when she heard we came to get a suit made.
“Aha! So you suddenly wanted to cancel the marriage arrangement because you found another man? Don’t be shy. I’ve seen plenty of ladies like you.”
“That’s not it! I told you, there will be no man in my life!”
“Pardon? Then why would you need to get someone else’s clothes…….”
“Let’s just say it’s my own way of serving those who protect the country.”
I made up an excuse and pulled out my wallet.
For the past eight years, the allowance I received from my uncle was pitifully small.
But ever since the marriage arrangement with the Freier family came up, my uncle entrusted me with a fat wallet, saying, “Always look beautiful and don’t embarrass yourself as the Freier family’s daughter-in-law!”
Since it’s money meant to be spent for the son of the Freier family, it should be fine, I suppose.
Meanwhile, the seamstress in charge of men’s clothing was absolutely thrilled behind the curtain.
“Your physique is very solid. To think I’ve only now met such a man! What kind of seamstress have you been entrusting your clothes to? I’m almost jealous!”
“Tailored clothes? I’ve always just had the ones I have altered a bit.”
“This time, I’ll make you truly splendid clothes! What color do you prefer?”
“Keep it inconspicuous. If I could look smaller, even better.”
“……Clothes aren’t camouflage. How about the trim? You can start by choosing the buttons and seam thread colors.”
“All black.”
Eventually, the seamstress lifted the curtain and signaled for help.
“You there, companion! Please help me out a bit. This man has no taste at all! If I do as he says, I’ll end up unleashing a black grim reaper onto the street!”
I have no taste either!
When it’s like this, there’s only one answer.
