Chapter 146
In front of his mother, Jaeha roughly treated Izzen as the close older brother, fitting the setting Izzen had established. But when the two of them were alone,
“Hey, get me some water.”
“Yes.”
He would naturally boss him around. He truly made Izzen do every little chore. It almost seemed like he was letting Izzen stay just because it was convenient for running errands.
Izzen only realized after living with him that Jaeha truly hated anything bothersome. He would silently endure and thoroughly complete the tasks he deemed necessary, but in reaction to that, he would absolutely refuse to lift a finger for other things. It was baffling how someone with that personality could live so diligently, faithfully studying, showing filial piety, and living up to the role of the original Jaeha.
Though it should have been difficult, Izzen secretly admired both Jaeha’s habit of using others and his thoroughness in executing necessary tasks as the innate qualities of a king. He willingly performed all the errands, even though he was increasingly reduced to Jaeha’s gopher instead of persuading him.
In fact, Izzen’s family was a clan that found joy in serving the Demon King even before they were masterminds, so this was only natural.
However, Jaeha, who was busy with academics, filial piety, and various other duties, was more often not at home than he was. Jaeha’s family members grew accustomed to Izzen and began to leave him alone in the house without a second thought. As a result, Izzen increasingly spent more time alone and bored in that house.
“Heh heh, you foolish beings. To trust me this much……. I will make good use of this trust in the future.”
Muttering such a mastermind-like line to himself, Izzen diligently swept and mopped Jaeha’s room as he was told. He was only spouting words in a form of self-consolation. In reality, even gaining this much trust from the family had no particular use.
After perfectly and thoroughly cleaning, leaving not a single speck of dust, Izzen became extremely bored. It was a truth that excessive boredom often led both humans and demons to question whether what they were doing was right. Such a period of doubt inevitably came to Izzen as well.
In fact, Izzen was already gradually becoming disturbed around that time. He was merely pretending not to notice such troubling feelings, believing they were unsuitable for a wicked villain and mastermind.
Around that time, the number of instances where demons who had fled to the Human World, driven by hunger, attacked humans indiscriminately was increasing. Although the humans were the first to break the peace treaty, the victims of those attacks were not the humans who started the war but innocent humans who had nothing to do with it. As Izzen had firmly held the conviction that it was right to protect human lives in a corner of his heart, even while filling his entire inner self with wicked conspiracies and schemes, this deeply bothered him.
Moreover, he was starting to struggle with controlling the demons he had gathered on his own. This was a natural consequence, as Izzen hadn’t been able to produce any plausible results.
Lately, voices demanding revenge were increasingly heard among them. If left unchecked, another war might break out. If a war were to happen, the demons, who were vastly outnumbered, would be at a disadvantage. If that happened, the Demon World would be utterly destroyed, with no chance of rehabilitation.
However, the Demon World was clearly going to be destroyed even if they just sat and did nothing. Their argument that they might as well put up one last, strong struggle wasn’t entirely wrong. Izzen was only forcefully holding them back because of his conviction that it was right to protect human life; otherwise, they were a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any moment.
He questioned if it was right to be cleaning here in such a situation. An anxiety arose that he might never be able to persuade Jaeha. If that were the case, he would truly be just wasting time and effort…….
“No…….”
Izzen shook his head violently and jumped up. Such disturbed and anxious feelings were not suitable for a wicked villain and mastermind. Rather than being lost in such useless thoughts, it was better to find something he could do and do it.
Thinking this, Izzen decided to search Jaeha’s house. A person’s history naturally accumulates in the house they grew up in. If he searched well, he might grasp a weakness compelling enough to make Jaeha the Demon King. Thinking this, Izzen became happy again.
“Heh heh…… I’ll make you regret leaving the house, trusting me……”
Muttering another mastermind-like line to himself, Izzen began to search the house. Of course, he searched while being thorough in reorganizing everything back to its original state so that no trace of the search remained. This consumed a significant amount of time, but he continued with patience. After all, he had nothing else to do.
But despite his efforts, no matter how much he searched the house, he couldn’t find Jaeha’s weakness or anything close to it.
Due to Jaeha’s usual tendency to hate anything bothersome, Izzen occasionally forgot this fact, but Jaeha was not a sloppy person either. On the contrary, he was a thorough person when it came to matters he cared about, no less so than Izzen.
Jaeha, who had already anticipated that Izzen would eventually try to find his weakness, had removed the only thing that could be considered his weakness from the house. As a result, no matter how much Izzen searched the house, he couldn’t find a single picture of Heesu. This was the reason Izzen didn’t know Heesu’s face, or even her existence, until Jaeha later developed and gave him a picture.
Although Izzen probably wouldn’t have instantly realized that Heesu was his precious person and only weakness just by seeing a photo, Jaeha simply didn’t want to leave any risk factors behind.
In fact, Heesu had come to the house a few times around that time, but Jaeha deliberately acted even grumpier than usual to quickly chase her away. This was to prevent her from running into Izzen.
As a result, the two people passed by each other several times without ever being aware of the other’s existence.
Anyway, although Izzen couldn’t find a picture of Heesu, he did find a room.
It was the room in the furthest corner of the house. Now that he thought about it, it was a very suspicious room. It was always locked, but it didn’t seem to be abandoned. It clearly seemed to have an owner, but he had never seen the owner.
Izzen looked at the door with eyes full of suspicion, then knocked, and even pressed his ear against it. There was definitely something in this room. He somehow felt a certainty about it.
Izzen secretly used the skill he had learned to slide a bobby pin into the keyhole and picked the lock. Thus, he opened Pandora’s box.
