Chapter 18
Suddenly remembering, Heesu looked around the living room. Without realizing it, her gaze went to where yesterday’s incident had occurred, but naturally it wasn’t there. It was so clean without a trace that she couldn’t even find where that spot was.
Could it have died just like that?
Tilting her head and scanning the living room more carefully, something entered Heesu’s field of vision. It was a semi-transparent light green oval life form crawling sluggishly, just crossing the threshold from a room into the living room.
“Huh!”
Heesu flinched in horror. Now that she saw it, yesterday’s fear came rushing back. She felt like the slime would rush at her again and cover her.
But the slime crawled to another place as if it couldn’t see Heesu. It just kept crawling around. Looking carefully, it wasn’t just crawling randomly, but systematically moving around corners, as if it wouldn’t leave any part of the floor uncovered, very thoroughly.
“W-what is it doing?”
Unable to suppress her curiosity, Heesu pointed at the slime with her finger and asked Izzen. Her fingertip trembled due to tension.
Izzen, who had been eating the food Heesu left behind, glanced over there and replied indifferently.
“Cleaning.”
“Cleaning……?”
“Yes. It crawls around the floor, dissolving and absorbing foreign substances that stick to its body. In the human world, there are things called robot vacuum cleaners that run on electricity, you can think of it as having a similar function.”
“Whoa.”
Heesu stared at the slime with her mouth wide open and eyes wide.
Indeed, where the slime had passed was spotlessly clean. Not only clean, but it was shining as if it had just been mopped.
The slime that had been crawling diligently climbed up onto the storage cabinet when its body touched it and cleaned the top too. There were several decorative items on top of the cabinet, but even when the slime covered and passed over them, nothing was disturbed. Instead, they became even more shiny.
“Amazing…….”
Heesu was impressed.
“Is that its original purpose?”
“Yes. It’s a breed improved for that purpose. In the demon world, every household basically has one.”
“But still, it’s a living creature……. Don’t animal protection groups say anything?”
“There are no such groups. What would you protect animals for? It’s a world where demons are too busy living their own lives.”
Izzen had an expression as if he didn’t understand. Only then did Heesu realize that he had lived in the demon world and closed her mouth.
Well, what rights would living creatures have in the demon world? Even human rights would be rock bottom.
Feeling sorry for the slime, Heesu looked at it with pitying eyes. Seeing it diligently cleaning without knowing about the unfair treatment it was receiving, she found it admirable, touching, and pitiful.
Perhaps because her heart was full of such feelings, what had definitely looked strange until yesterday now seemed cute. No, it was cute. What was so special about those button eyes and cat mouth that she would discriminate against this creature? That would be pushing an already pitiful fate further into the mire. At the very least, she alone should find it cute, that was the minimum courtesy.
Having reached that conclusion, Heesu asked Izzen with a serious face.
“Can I give it a name?”
“What for?”
“Just…… because I want to.”
“Well. Do as you please.”
When Izzen’s permission was given, Heesu said with a bright smile.
“Its name is now Button.”
“That’s a strange name.”
“Isn’t it cute?”
“Not really…….”
“Button! Your name is Button from now on. You understand, Button?”
Regardless of Izzen’s disapproving reaction, Heesu cheerfully giggled and spoke to the slime. Then, as if suddenly remembering, she asked Izzen again.
“But what does it eat to survive? Don’t tell me the foreign substances it absorbs while cleaning are its food?”
“No. Those have no nutritional value, so that won’t work.”
“Then does it eat food separately?”
“It does eat, but…….”
Heesu waited for Izzen’s answer with expectant eyes.
If the slime ate food, she wanted to personally take care of its meals. If there was anything she could do for that poor creature, she wanted to do everything for it.
Thinking this way, Heesu waited for Izzen’s answer, but,
“Well, it absorbed quite a bit yesterday, so it won’t need any for a while.”
At those words, her heart instantly froze cold. It felt like cold sweat was running down the back of her head.
At the ominous suspicion that surged again, Heesu quickly shook her head. She didn’t want to know. Actually, she wanted to ask, but felt she shouldn’t ask any more.
Instead, Heesu hurriedly deleted from her head all the admirable thoughts about wanting to personally take care of that creature’s meals or wanting to do anything she could for it.
