Chapter 21
The caterpillar was quite large. Its thickness was about the size of Heesu’s arm, and its length seemed to be about the size of Heesu’s foot. Since it was unrealistically large, it felt more like a monster from a game rather than an ordinary caterpillar. Since it was actually a demon, it would be closer to that.
“Ugh…….”
Heesu trembled and raised her magic wand.
Heesu usually hated bugs with no legs or too many legs, but this one looked like a bug with no legs yet had short legs sprouting from each segment. It was the worst form possible, a combination of disgusting and disgusting. It was so disgusting that just looking at it made her shudder with goosebumps.
To tell her to fight such a disgusting thing was really too much. It seemed better to fight a large monster rather than fight with such a bug. If she could, she wanted to throw away her sense of mission as a magical girl and run away.
But if she did that in just her second battle, she would become an unqualified magical girl who deserved to get a failing grade. With that thought, Heesu barely suppressed that impulse. She didn’t want to be ashamed of all the time she had spent dreaming of being a magical girl. Just as Heesu, who had barely pulled herself together, was looking ahead with determination,
“Kyaaaah!!”
The caterpillar suddenly jumped up and lunged at Heesu. Horrified, Heesu let out a sharp scream that seemed to exceed the audible frequency range and swung her magic wand vigorously.
She couldn’t believe it even seeing it. For something that looked like a caterpillar to jump around like a grasshopper—it really seemed crazy.
The attack driven by genuine fear and instinct was fierce like a cleanup hitter at a baseball stadium. The caterpillar was hit squarely by the magic wand swung like a baseball bat. It would have been great if it had flown away like a baseball, but instead the caterpillar stuck to the magic wand.
“Kyaaaaaaaaaah!!”
Terrified, Heesu screamed with the momentum to exceed the audible frequency this time for sure. And with her eyes tightly shut, she swung the magic wand wildly. This was no longer a battle or anything. It was just thrashing around from physiological disgust.
“Uwaaaaaaah!!”
In the midst of this, the wildly swinging magic wand hit a tree and Heesu ended up losing her grip. Startled, Heesu challenged the limits of audible frequency once again and shut her eyes tight. She felt like the caterpillar she had dropped would jump up like a grasshopper again and rush at her at any moment.
“…….”
But nothing happened.
“It’s over.”
At Izzen’s voice, Heesu flinched and carefully opened her eyes that she had closed. Trembling as she looked around, she saw the magic wand lying flat on the ground along with the caterpillar that had fallen over and was leaking bodily fluids. It seemed to have gotten caught between the wand and the tree when the magic wand hit the tree. It must have received quite a shock as it was no longer moving.
“Hic, hic…….”
Only then did the tension ease, and Heesu collapsed sobbing. She let out a sigh of relief that she had finally escaped from that disgusting caterpillar. She had trembled so much that her legs were still shaking.
……To fight in such a way again.
As her fear subsided, self-loathing heavily rushed in to fill the void. After her first battle where she had swung her magic wand like a club, she had resolved again and again to fight more stylishly in the next battle, but this time she had swung her magic wand like a baseball bat. On top of that, she had thrashed around like crazy, swinging wildly. Despite practicing those wonderful poses over and over, everything was useless.
While Heesu was engaging in such self-criticism, Izzen approached the caterpillar and examined its condition from various angles.
“It seems to be dead.”
“I-is it dead?”
“Yes. Since it was hit squarely.”
“Hiiiik…….”
“You still fight well instinctively. That’s really amazing.”
Izzen’s praise somehow didn’t sound like praise. Actually, she didn’t want to be praised either. Winning this way wasn’t happy at all. She just felt self-loathing and pain, wondering if this was why she became a magical girl.
While Heesu was sinking into endless deep and deeper self-criticism and worrying,
“For the clan that protects forests and flowers to meet their end this way…….”
Suddenly Izzen’s muttering stuck sharply in her ears. Surprised, Heesu quickly raised her head and looked in that direction.
“Is he the last of that clan?”
“Yes. Demons are also gradually heading toward extinction…….”
“W-what should I do……”
Heesu made a tearful face. Well, it was a caterpillar, and it was quite disgusting being a caterpillar that jumped around like a grasshopper……. But still, wasn’t it supposed to become a butterfly when it grew up? Wasn’t it supposed to become a clan famous for its beauty? Since it protected forests and flowers, it even felt somewhat sacred, but she had just cut off the last breath of that clan. Thinking that way, heavy guilt pressed down on her chest.
If there were a demon history book, the end of this clan would be recorded as ‘met their demise caught between a magic wand swung like a baseball bat by a magical girl and a tree.’ That fact made her feel even more guilty. If she had known that, she would have swung the baseball bat…… no, the magic wand more gently.
Heesu deeply regretted it. If she could, she wanted to turn back time.
“Oh, no. It’s alive.”
As if her prayer had been heard, the caterpillar twitched its legs slightly. When surprised Heesu quickly turned her head, she saw Izzen lifting up the caterpillar and throwing it straight at her.
“Here, this is your new master.”
“Kyaaaaaaah!!”
Heesu, who had completely forgotten her earlier wish, screamed in horror. Despite her desperate backing away, the flying caterpillar fell onto Heesu’s chest. If it had been Heesu’s real body, it would have slid right off, but unfortunately, thanks to having large b*****s, the caterpillar was able to make a quite stable landing. Her b*****s jiggled slightly from the impact of something landing on them. The bug’s legs dug slightly into her flesh, creating small indentations.
“Hiiik…….”
