Chapter 22
With a tree now touching her back so she couldn’t back away any further, Heesu gulped. Heesu looked down at the caterpillar with extreme tension. She wanted to tear it off and throw it away immediately, but somehow she couldn’t.
Heesu was afraid that the caterpillar would burrow between her legs like Violen had and rush at her privates to do something s****l. However, the caterpillar just stuck to her chest and only stared at her face quietly.
Its round, large eyes blinked. The eyes that had gleamed fiercely with wildness earlier were now sparkling with friendliness toward its master.
Perhaps because of those eyes, the caterpillar felt somewhat cute. Looking closely, it felt more like a character than an actual caterpillar. The difference in perspective was tremendous—the surface that she had thought was unpleasantly shiny like metal earlier now seemed to have a smooth, glass-like luster and looked fine. It was like a plastic toy that children play with.
But still, it was a caterpillar.
“Ugh…….”
Heesu trembled and shut her eyes tight. Still, she had relaxed and calmed down somewhat, so she could look at Izzen and ask calmly.
“This one, well…… it’s not trying to do anything else?”
“No. Isn’t it still young?”
“Ah, well, since it’s a caterpillar…….”
Heesu let out a sigh of relief. She wanted to pat her chest in relief, but since the caterpillar was stuck there, she only did so in her heart.
Then she looked at the caterpillar again with troubled eyes. It was fortunate that it was just staying there and not doing anything else, but staying like this was actually just as troublesome.
“Then…… how long is it going to stay like this?”
“Until its affection is satisfied.”
“If its affection isn’t satisfied, it won’t be able to become humanized either, right?”
“That’s right.”
“When will it be satisfied?”
“Well.”
“…….”
When Heesu looked at Izzen with an expression of disbelief at his irresponsible answer, he frowned slightly and explained.
“It’s still young, so it can only express affection in that way, but that alone provides only a small amount of satisfying affection. So even I don’t know when it might be satisfied.”
“Then…… do I have to keep staying like this?”
“Yes. Perhaps you might have to live like this for a while…….”
“I…… don’t want to…….”
Heesu made a tearful face in despair. To think she would have to go about her daily life with a caterpillar attached for a while—just thinking about it was horrible. Heesu, who had been fretting, eventually turned away from the caterpillar that was staring at her with sparkling eyes and casually brought up the topic to Izzen.
“What if we just aban…… abandon it and go……?”
“Oh my. Would you abandon such a creature that’s sticking to you because it likes its new master so much?”
“B-but I can’t live with a caterpillar attached!”
“It won’t be a caterpillar forever. If you raise it well, it might become a butterfly someday…….”
“When will that be!”
At Heesu’s firm exclamation, Izzen, who had been staring at her for a moment, soon nodded.
“Yes. If you dislike it that much, Miss Heesu, it can’t be helped. Let’s abandon it and go.”
Fortunately, he seemed willing to accept without further insistence. It was an attitude befitting someone with a policy of prioritizing magical girls’ human rights above all else.
Instead, he looked at the distant mountains, sighed, and muttered as if talking to himself.
“Ah, how truly pitiful. For the clan that protects forests and flowers to ultimately meet their end this way…….”
Though he said it as if talking to himself, it was clearly meant to be heard, and Heesu was horrified by those words.
“Uwah! Didn’t you save it? Why is it dying?”
“Since you became its master but that master abandoned it, of course it will die.”
“W-why……?!”
“Because its master isn’t by its side. This caterpillar will now starve for affection alone in a place without its beloved master and eventually die miserably from starvation. Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m not blaming you, Miss Heesu……”
“How can I not worry when you say it like that! Then in the end, I’m the one killing it! In the end, I’m the one cutting off this clan’s lifeline!”
“Hmm…… honestly, I can’t say that’s not true.”
“Wow, damn!”
After bursting out in indignation, Heesu eventually shut her eyes tight and shouted.
“Fine, I get it! I’ll take it! I’ll take it with me!”
“Yes.”
Izzen nodded quickly as if he had been waiting for this. Then, as if afraid Heesu might change her mind, he quickly approached, covered the caterpillar with a cloth bundle, and tied the ends behind Heesu’s neck. It seemed he had already prepared by untying what he had used to wrap the lunch boxes earlier.
“If you go down like this, people probably won’t notice.”
“Damn it.”
Heesu gritted her teeth. As he said, Heesu now just looked like she was wearing a somewhat unique scarf and didn’t stand out. Since hikers wore all sorts of unusual scarves anyway, wearing this scarf actually seemed to complete Heesu’s hiking fashion. The spot where the caterpillar was hidden bulged out unnaturally, but no one would bother to look closely.
This prevented the clan from being recorded in demon history books as ‘defeated when caught between a magic wand swung like a baseball bat by a magical girl and a tree, but met their end abandoned by the magical girl who became their master.’ Heesu herself was confused about why she had to feel responsible for a demon clan’s extinction, but still, being confused was better than feeling uncomfortable.
Izzen spoke to her with a somewhat pleased expression.
“Now, Miss Heesu. Let’s go down. Since we climbed up for an hour, we just need to go down for an hour.”
“Uwaaah…….”
Heesu dropped her head in despair again. There was no butterfly, no handsome man, but a caterpillar and the descent remained. It truly couldn’t help but be a difficult day.
