The morning sunlight shone exceptionally clear.
Heesu, who had just woken up, came outside rubbing her eyes as usual. She exchanged smiles and greetings with Violen, who was preparing breakfast, gave a casual, indifferent nod to Izzen, who was reading the newspaper, and today too watched Button crawling around here and there on the floor, diligently cleaning.
After finishing her morning greetings, Heesu stood still and looked around the living room with vacant eyes.
“……Huh?”
Heesu paused, having discovered something in the living room. There was something strange on the large rubber tree placed in the center of the living room. Wondering if she had seen wrong in her drowsiness, she rubbed her eyes and checked again, but it was still strange.
Heesu approached closer and observed it with a furrowed brow. A dried rubber tree leaf was rolled up in an elongated shape and hanging diagonally from something like a spider web. The size seemed to be about the length of Heesu’s foot.
Thinking it might be withered leaves clumped together instead of falling off, Heesu carelessly tried to grab it and pull it off.
“Kyaaaah!”
The moment she applied pressure with her hand, she felt a squishy sensation of something wriggling inside along with lukewarm warmth. Heesu screamed in horror. At the bizarre scream that came out in her surprise, the attention of everyone in the living room was focused on her.
“Are you okay?!”
“What’s wrong, Master!”
Violen, who had been preparing breakfast, rushed over in one step and hurriedly embraced Heesu’s shoulders. Rufus also appeared from somewhere and charged over with fierce momentum, then lowered his stance and took a defensive posture, baring his fangs with a growling sound. If there was anything threatening his master there, he was ready to pounce and bite it immediately. Even Button, who had been crawling on the floor, flinched and started heading that way. It was so slow that no one even noticed though.
“Oh my.”
While everyone was making an unnecessary commotion, only Izzen sat calmly in his chair and glanced at the scene from behind his newspaper.
“You almost severed the last breath of the forest and flower guardian clan.”
“……Huh?”
At those words, Heesu blinked and observed the strange thing once more.
“A caterpillar?”
“It’s a chrysalis now.”
“Oh my…….”
Heesu exclaimed with her mouth wide open. Now that she heard it, it certainly looked like a magnified version of the chrysalises she commonly saw. It was amazing that the caterpillar that had been crawling around just yesterday had transformed into this form overnight. She was moved anew by the mystery of life, and her heart pounded.
“It’s really growing……. So it’ll become a butterfly soon?”
“Yes. Of course.”
“When do you think it will emerge?”
“I can’t say exactly since it depends on the magical power each individual possesses. However, since the timing of becoming a chrysalis was earlier than expected, I think the metamorphosis period will also be on the early side.”
Heesu listened intently with sparkling eyes to Izzen’s explanation, which was like a direct copy of an elementary school natural science class. Rufus, who was crouching beside her, also listened with a serious expression, then said gravely:
“Metamorphosis is bad. I’ll punish it.”
“Not that kind of metamorphosis…….”
“Isn’t that metamorphosis why Master was surprised?”
“That’s not it, metamorphosis here means shedding its shell and coming out…”
“A metamorphosis that sheds its shell. I’ll punish it.”
“So…… not that kind of metamorphosis…….”
No matter how well Izzen explained, his conversation with Rufus kept going in circles. While he was rarely perplexed and struggling, Heesu clasped her hands together with a girlish expression.
“I’m looking forward to it…….”
It was said to be a clan famous for beauty in the demon world. Just thinking about how beautiful a butterfly it would be reborn as made her chest swell with anticipation and excitement.
Watching this, Violen smiled bitterly and released Heesu’s shoulders.
“I’m glad it’s nothing serious.”
“Ah…… sorry for startling you unnecessarily.”
“It’s fine.”
Violen headed back to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Button, who had been crawling hard toward this direction, also flinched and turned to head elsewhere. The situation was roughly settled, but only Rufus remained alone, burning with fighting spirit with a serious expression.
“Master doesn’t need to be sorry! It startled Master, so it’s bad! I’ll punish it!”
“Don’t do that…….”
“Understood.”
Heesu, who had instantly solved the problem that Izzen couldn’t resolve despite his efforts, headed to the sofa. Izzen, whose expression had become like someone whose life had suddenly become meaningless, looked resentfully at her, but Heesu, unaware, didn’t notice and sank her back deep into the sofa, picked up the remote, and turned on the TV. Izzen sighed and shook his head before looking back at his newspaper.
Since it was still morning, no matter how many times she changed the channels, there weren’t any particularly interesting programs on. Reluctantly, Heesu stared blankly at people having heated discussions about methods for maintaining a healthy body and living long.
Getting bored of that quickly, Heesu looked around aimlessly and suddenly paused when she discovered Rufus, who was hesitating about three steps away while watching her.
“What are you doing there?”
“I’m afraid Master will dislike it if I come closer…….”
Rufus said listlessly and hung his head. He looked dejected. A faint whimpering sound could be heard from beyond his throat.
That day, Heesu had said she wasn’t forgiving him yet. So he seemed to be watching her mood, afraid she might still be angry.
Actually, Heesu’s feelings weren’t completely resolved even now. When she thought about that incident, she still felt scared and angry. Nevertheless, seeing the big man crouching with drooping shoulders made her feel sorry for him.
“It’s okay. Come here.”
“Yeah!”
As soon as Heesu’s permission was given, Rufus grinned and scurried over to Heesu’s side. She expected him to climb onto the sofa and sit next to her right away, but unexpectedly, Rufus went close to Heesu’s feet under the sofa and settled there, crouching down.
“Aren’t you uncomfortable?”
“No! It’s very good!”
Even though he wasn’t even touching her, Rufus was just happy to be near his master and sat with a satisfied expression, hugging his knees with a big smile. Despite being a large and handsomely built adult man, his behavior was exactly like a dog.
Watching this curiously, Heesu unconsciously smiled. It was because she had the illusion of seeing a tail swishing back and forth behind his rear. When that tail swished and brushed against her leg, she even felt the soft texture characteristic of animal fur.
“Gasp!! It’s…… not an illusion?!”
Heesu screamed in shock and jumped up. It was such a vivid sensation that she couldn’t dismiss it as just an illusion. Rufus, who was startled along with her and looked up at her, had his expression become dejected again.
“Master. Do you really dislike me being close? If you dislike it, I’ll go back…….”
“No, that’s not it…….”
The tail that had been wagging cheerfully until just now drooped to the floor. Heesu quickly shook her head and sat back on the sofa. Only then did Rufus’s expression relax with relief, but still anxious, his drooped tail continued to twitch.
