Chapter 92
And honestly… it wasn’t all that far-fetched.
Several young ladies, invited as acquaintances of the Lambert County, were already blushing or whispering as they looked at Aldrick. While circling the ballroom, Violet heard more than ten different people ask who that handsome knight was.
It was a good thing that more people were coming to think well of Aldrick. The attention from women was the same. The more noble ladies who admired him, the greater his chances of finding true love.
However, despite thinking it was a good development, Violet felt choked with a stifling sensation and impulsively left the ballroom.
What she overlooked, however, was one crucial fact—Aldrick had not taken his attention off her for even a moment.
That evening, seeing Violet all dressed up for the banquet, Aldrick fell into a familiar state of unease.
With her shoulders exposed, light makeup, and her hair tied up, Violet looked so stunning it was hard to breathe. It was that kind of feeling that triggered his anxiety.
Most of the men Count Lambert had invited were of similar status to himself. Some were refined gentlemen, others knights like Aldrick. Regardless of who they were, Aldrick couldn’t stand the thought of another man eyeing Violet.
And the moment he noticed she had disappeared from the banquet, his unease turned to full-blown tension. Aldrick immediately slipped away from his group and headed to the garden.
He considered that perhaps Violet had grown tired and gone up to her room, but first, the garden was closer.
Sure enough, his worst fears materialized right before his eyes.
“As I said the last time, Milady, you are truly beautiful. You have a charm that simply cannot be found in the noble ladies of the capital.”
Some smooth-talking scoundrel was kissing the back of Violet’s hand. Aldrick had vaguely imagined such a thing, but seeing it with his own eyes made his blood boil.
And judging by the man’s words, this wasn’t the first time.
“I’m sorry, Viscount, but as you already know, I’m a married woman. And I have no intention of doing anything improper behind my husband’s back.”
Violet pulled her hand away and hid it behind her, speaking in a firm tone. But the man clung persistently.
“All the more reason it has to be in secret. That’s what makes it exciting. Allow me to show you a whole new world, Milady.”
Flames practically burst from Aldrick’s eyes.
Would it be permissible to kill someone in Count Lambert’s garden?
He approached silently, but Violet noticed him first.
“Aldrick!”
When she saw him striding forward with terrifying energy, sword drawn, she let out a scream before she could stop herself. It was a ceremonial decorative sword, but right now, even that looked like a deadly weapon in his hands.
“No— Stop!”
She had no idea what he was thinking, but attacking a nobleman could become a serious issue.
As Violet barely managed to stop him, the man who had been making advances had already scurried off.
Realizing the man had disappeared, Aldrick returned the sword to its sheath. But the look he gave Violet was still full of unresolved anger.
“Are you taking that bastard’s side right now?”
His sharp voice left her flustered and speechless. Honestly, it felt unfair.
Hadn’t he heard their conversation?
Violet had tried her best to extricate herself politely from that playboy. So what was he going on about?
The tangled emotions she’d felt since Aldrick’s return quickly turned to anger. Her eyes toward him grew sharp.
“What’s with that tone? Did I do something wrong? Shouldn’t you be thanking me for stopping you from killing a noble and going to jail?”
Aldrick, still treated like a younger brother by Violet, was equally infuriated.
The night sky behind them, their gazes collided like sparks.
“Why were you out here alone in the dark in the first place? If you’d stayed by my side, none of this would’ve happened. You’re my wife, Violet.”
At Aldrick’s accusatory tone, Violet was absolutely livid. Her overheated head didn’t stop the words from spilling out.
“Yes, of course I am!”
For a brief moment, Aldrick was satisfied to hear Violet acknowledge herself as his wife.
But that didn’t last long. His satisfaction turned into the sting of a slap across the back of his head.
“Until we get divorced!”
