Chapter 32
‘I’m sure he meant for me to rest because I worked hard, but why does it sound like he’s telling me to get out of the way because I can’t even cook?’
I know it can’t be helped, but my personality is truly beyond saving.
Secretly shaking her head, she touched the flowers she had placed in a vase and arranged them beautifully.
“They are almost done. I think I just need to turn them a bit more as they cook.”
“Wow, I am looking forward to it.”
She spoke with a forced smile, but it was strangely soulless.
‘But I hate fish…….’
If general food made from vegetables tasted somewhere between food waste and a sewer, fish was even less than that. For the sake of her mental health, she would not think deeply about it. At any rate, it was a terrible taste even when eaten raw, so she didn’t know how much more nauseating it would become when eaten cooked.
If it were lunch, she would have skipped it saying she was not hungry, but since it was dinner, she could not even skip it. Although her height and frame were not on the large side, eating only one meal a day felt like too much of a stretch. If one were just a human, would it not be an absurdity to eat only once a day?
While Irene turned away as if avoiding it and fiddled with the flowers endlessly, Idris took the skewers from the fire and began to place them on the table. When the side dishes to be eaten together and even soup were placed on the table, a fairly luxurious meal was completed.
Eventually sitting at the table, Irene observed Idris openly. His expression had become noticeably brighter. At that sight, a laugh naturally scattered.
“See that? You can find food in your own way even in these mountains, right? I told you that you don’t have to worry so seriously about starving to death.”
“Haha…… Perhaps it is because I grew up not eating well, I am sensitive to hunger. This is embarrassing.”
Idris rubbed the back of his neck with a bashful smile. His blue eyes seemed to wander for a moment before closing, and he gave the greeting, “I will enjoy the meal.”
At the sight of him openly trying to gloss it over, Irene burst into laughter. An Idris who was that embarrassed was new. Then again, he should have been moderately fussy about finding food…… It was unlike him, who was excessively calm and observant of her moods.
Calmly mulling over the information, Irene left a word that she would enjoy the meal in a cheerful voice and began to eat the familiar soup little by little. It was just that it had become drastically less untasty; but it was still just as bad. Since it was an issue with her tongue, she could not blame anyone.
‘No. I can just blame God, right?’
While Irene, who had reached the peak of misotheism, threw all sorts of frivolous curses inwardly, the unsuspecting Idris must have been very hungry as he finished half the soup in one go and took a large bite out of a fish skewer.
Watching Idris finish his second fish with a very bright face, Irene observed his mood. Gulping with tension, she took courage and poked a small piece of fallen fish meat and put it in her mouth.
“It is…… tastier than I expected?”
“Is that so? It seems to be at a decent enough level.”
Idris looked at her briefly with eyes that asked, ‘Is it that good?’ and began to focus on the meal again. He didn’t know, but for her, even this level of not feeling like she would vomit was a quite surprising result.
‘If the cooking was the problem rather than the ingredients, then why on earth did I suffer for those years……’
At the time of Idris’s first cooking, the excuse of ‘well, we used decent ingredients’ was possible, but seeing this kind of result even with fish, the most nauseating ingredient, she couldn’t help but admit that her cooking skills were the problem. If she had been habituated to this level of food from the very beginning, she might have lived eating normal food. A self-mocking smile brushed past Irene’s face.
Picking up the skewer of the smallest fish, Irene kept her mouth tightly shut, but soon gathered her courage and took a large bite. The sound of crunching echoed loudly inside her mouth.
‘I think this is actually quite alright!’
It was a nauseating taste that was exciting enough to appropriately endure meals with Idris much more in the future.
Irene, who had been excited, opened her tightly closed eyes and looked straight ahead with a twinkling gaze. However, Idris was frozen solid while holding a stick with only the bare bones left after finishing almost everything. His pupils were shaking intensely with bewilderment.
Confusingly, there was no fear…… at all. It was not the feeling of condemning her as a demon. It was an atmosphere as if she had truly committed a great wrong.
What on earth is it?
Is he perhaps upset that I snatched away the fish and ate it?
