Chapter 116
Getting ready took longer than expected. This was because my opinion and the maids’ clashed.
Given the destination, I intended to wear a modest day dress instead of a gorgeous, luxurious one.
Upon hearing this, two particularly sociable maids began to vehemently oppose the idea. They insisted that since the weather was so nice, why not wear something in a brighter color, or that a dress made of lightweight fabric would be perfectly comfortable.
Having lived in the capital, where fashion trends change rapidly, the maids were very strict about aesthetics. And I was weak to this kind of person—people who were meddlesome but approached even someone as socially awkward as me with goodwill.
In the end, I decided to wear a yellowish, champagne-colored dress instead of the green one I had originally intended to wear. The maids, delighted, began my adornment.
Since I had chosen a dress different from my usual style, my hairstyle and makeup also became different from usual.
If compared to a season, it was exactly like a warm spring sunlight. My hair was left long with only a portion of it braided, and my makeup had just enough color to look vibrant.
And just as I was finishing straightening my dress, one of the maids asked me,
“What shoes would you like to wear, Madam?”
Since I was still having my hair done, my focus was a little scattered as I thought about it.
The dress, with its soft pleats running along the bustline and waist, was made of a light, delicate fabric — it would go well with almost any design of shoes.
Whether it was the pair Danel had bought for me a few days ago or the ones I had worn comfortably for a long time, both would match perfectly.
Normally, I would have chosen the new shoes just to show them to Danel, but today’s schedule was the problem.
From the square where the spring festival was being held to our destination, the Grand Cathedral, we wouldn’t be able to take a carriage.
As I was hesitating, another idea came to mind.
‘It might not be a bad idea to walk all the way from the townhouse grounds…’
It would have been quite a demanding thing for an ordinary noblewoman, but at least in terms of stamina, I was far from ordinary.
Hadn’t I already proven as much by enduring Danel Veloce’s relentless passion?
I told the maid to bring me the most comfortable pair of shoes.
Perhaps realizing my intention, she smiled brightly and went to the dressing room.
Not long after she returned, Danel entered the bedchamber.
“……”
The moment he stepped inside, his steps halted. Through the mirror, his gaze stopped squarely on me.
I slowly turned to face him.
The maids who had been helping me — one putting on my shoes, the other smoothing out the folds of my dress — smiled cheerfully as their hands moved quickly.
Once all the maids had withdrawn, Danel finally spoke.
“…The dress suits you well.”
His low voice filled the quiet room.
“Are you surprised? I don’t usually wear light-colored dresses.”
“It’s different from your usual style, yes, but somehow…”
He paused, as if carefully choosing his words.
“It reminded me of the dress you wore at our wedding.”
His violet eyes lowered to the hem of my dress, which shimmered as sunlight poured over it.
Now that he mentioned it, the golden threads that caught the light did resemble the gown I had worn on our wedding day.
Perhaps it was because he had spent years painting, but Danel truly had a keen eye for detail.
Though, that might also be because he had his eyes on me for the entire ceremony.
Either way, his words lifted my spirits.
Danel stepped closer to me. Extending his hand to escort me, he waited.
I placed my hand in his and rose from the chair.
