Chapter 216
Ysaris couldn’t refuse Crown Prince Serenus’s command. But she also couldn’t bring herself to tell Cain they’d been discovered.
She wasn’t ready to let him go.
Ysaris knew she was hurting Cain each time, but she had no other choice. She couldn’t leave him, couldn’t let him die, and couldn’t flee abroad to escape the Chernian royal family’s pursuit. Every path led to ruin.
Yet even this precarious balance was enough. Cain still loved her devotedly, and she loved him. Like children covering their eyes, they clung to their sweet delusion. As long as they had each other, nothing else mattered.
…Until the day she was ordered to meet Bariteon.
She watched nervously as Cain’s Adam’s apple bobbed repeatedly, his jaw clenched and fists trembling with suppressed emotion.
She kissed him, coaxed and reassured him, repeating “It’s only you I love” dozens of times until he finally nodded.
Even after Ysaris returned from her meeting with Bariteon, Cain remained uneasy. Then one day, after a three-week “leave,” he returned with strange news.
Weeks passed. Cain, who’d been mysteriously absent lately, suddenly showed Ysaris a royal decree while she strolled in the gardens.
‘How? What could Cain possibly have offered? What is happening?’
Confusion and questions swirled in her eyes, but Cain didn’t explain. After glancing around, he bowed his head guiltily.
And so, the day of reckoning arrived.
