Chapter 1
_____
Caitlyn Hardick knew very well what others called her. A flower painted on a wall. No, perhaps more like a weed painted on a wall. In order for the sister of a baronet, who sat at the very bottom of the nobility, to avoid being ostracized by society, she had to be either wealthy or extremely sociable.
Unfortunately, Caitlyn was neither.
“I don’t know with what kind of face Miss Hardick chose to show up, hohoho.”
“Truly. Her brother, Sir Edward, is quite decent…… It’s just a pity for the Sir.”
“No matter how excellent he is, he’s still just a baronet. How could he ever compare to long-standing families like ours?”
Caitlyn stared at them quietly. She knew their futures. The Baroness bursting into laughter and mocking her would suffer a miscarriage of her precious first child next winter, and the Viscount’s daughter mentioning her brother would discover that her husband had been having an affair all along, immediately after their wedding at the end of this year.
“Did you see that? That unpleasant gaze…… Oh! Count Quark has just entered. Let’s go and greet him quickly.”
They didn’t need to try so hard to get on the good graces of that drunkard Count. Next week, Count Quark would slip on an icy road while returning home after drinking heavily and die a pathetic death.
But Caitlyn didn’t let any of this out of her mouth. Because there was no one who believed her.
“Are you alright, Miss Hardick?”
The owner of this canary-like voice was Lady Leslie Sufferd. As the second daughter of Count Sufferd, she was liked by everyone thanks to her natural charm and bright, cheerful personality.
“Yes.”
Responding briefly, Caitlyn avoided Leslie’s gaze. Of all those gathered in this ballroom, it was Leslie who awaited the most tragic future. Her dearly beloved family would all die in a carriage accident on the same day at the same time, and she, driven mad by grief and longing, would throw herself at any carriage she saw until she was confined to a mental hospital.
‘And she won’t see the outside world again until she dies.’……Knowing such a future, how could she look her straight in the eye? However, Leslie, knowing nothing of the inner circumstances, seemed to have completely misunderstood.
“I’ll apologize on their behalf, Miss Hardick. Everyone is…… being too rude.”
“There’s no need for Lady Sufferd to apologize on their behalf.”
Caitlyn shook her head.
“I’m used to it, so it’s nothing.”
“Still, Miss Hardick…….”
Leslie tried with difficulty to continue, but Caitlyn quickly cut her off.
“I’m tired. I’ll be going now.”
Caitlyn quickly left the spot. Her heart felt particularly uncomfortable whenever she dealt with someone like Leslie. She had lived uprightly without harming anyone, yet her destined future was nothing short of horrific.
Even if she pitied her and told her the future, it was no use. Because no one believed her prophecies. Since she was a child, Caitlyn had made numerous efforts to prevent destined tragedies, but there were no exceptions. Whether it was family or friends…… no one believed her, and all of Caitlyn’s struggles to stop the future ended in vain.
Those who didn’t know the heart of the woman leaving laughed loudly at the public enemy of society.
“With Miss Hardick leaving already, today’s ball is a success.”
“Truly. Didn’t they say strange things happen wherever she goes?”
“Oh, it’s likely just a coincidence. Does that even make scientific sense?”
“Hmph, science my foot. Look at Miss Hardick’s family. Her parents died like that and her brother is ill…… only she is fine.”
“That’s why even with a face like that, she doesn’t even get an offer for a second wife position. Who would want to bring a woman who calls down misfortune into their family?”
Whispers erupted from the crowd every time Caitlyn passed people by. She couldn’t help but know the contents even without trying to listen.
‘They must be whispering about how ominous I am.’
It was an extremely familiar occurrence. It was only three more steps to the door leading out of the banquet hall. The coachman she hired for the day’s wage wouldn’t even be surprised to see her come out early. It was just as Caitlyn was about to swing the door open and head outside.
She felt a violent pain in her forehead. It was because she had collided head-on with someone’s rigid arm. Caitlyn apologized reflexively. It might have been the other party’s fault, but given her position in society, it was better to just apologize first.
“I’m sorry. I…….”
