Chapter 0
Prologue
“If you can’t divorce your husband based on his faults…”
Eugene stepped closer to me with a crooked smile. As he drew nearer, the fresh woody scent became stronger.
“Then you just have to make it the wife’s fault.”
His large hand gripped my chin, tilting it sharply upward due to our height difference.
Before I realized it, he had already come right in front of me. My reflection filled his violet eyes that still sparkled with amusement.
I swallowed a trembling breath and tightly shut my eyes.
‘I’m pregnant with your husband’s child.’
Chloe’s voice lingered like an afterimage in my ear. I couldn’t bear to believe the betrayal of a friend who had been by my side for so long.
‘It’s too pitiful for a child to grow up without a father. Don’t you think so, Winter?’
My heart sank at her perfectly innocent smile, so typically Chloe. As always, her clear face was completely devoid of malicious intent.
‘Winter, it’s Hayden’s child. You couldn’t do it, but I did.’
A pleased smile spread across eyes that met mine naturally.
It was the sweet smile I once adored dearly. She spoke a terrible truth in a calm tone without a trace of guilt on her face.
‘Divorce Hayden, Winter. You always told me to seize opportunities.’
I never imagined the advice I once gave her would return like this.
‘If you step up, Hayden won’t struggle so much. Because he’s the child’s father. You couldn’t have a child, after all.’
How did it come to this? As I bit my lip, a sharp pain spread.
Firm fingers brushed against my lips, bringing me back to reality. When I lifted my eyelids, Eugene was looking down at me with languid eyes.
“Answer me, Winter.”
His voice held a trace of enjoyment. Panting, I turned my head away.
The situation was pushing me to the limit. It was overwhelming.
‘Please divorce me, Hayden.’
‘Winter.’
A gentle sigh, so characteristic of his temperament, fell over my head. I couldn’t bring myself to look up.
‘You’re not saying this without knowing how disgraceful divorce is for nobles, right?’
His voice was soft, unbelievably so for the person who created this situation.
‘The child can’t be raised without a father, Hayden.’
‘That child was a mistake.’
A mistake. To think that such words would come from the mouth of my gentle husband, directed at the child in another woman’s belly. But the shock didn’t end there.
‘We can arrange an adoption once the child is born. We can raise it as ours.’
‘I… I can’t do that. I don’t have the confidence to live like that. Even if you refuse, I’ll proceed with the divorce.’
‘You can’t divorce me anyway.’
[According to this contract, Party B shall not file for divorce based on Party A’s faults.]
At the end of the premarital contract, whose existence I didn’t even know, my father’s seal was stamped clearly.
You… When did you all start deceiving me?
You pushed me into a corner like this—pushed me until I could no longer think rationally.
Now, the choices I could make were few.
Live as a Marchioness in name only, or else….
Tears slipped through my tightly shut eyes. Eugene’s fingers tightened on my chin.
“Ah…!”
When I opened my eyes, Eugene appeared blurred through my transparent tears.
With the face of a black panther before its prey, he growled.
“Don’t cry so pathetically.”
Enjoying my misery, Eugene smiled crookedly and said,
“I can’t stand seeing you shed tears for a bastard like him.”
He roughly pulled me in by the waist and kissed me. A soft tongue parted my lips and invaded my mouth. Eugene’s desire, demanding no permission, consumed me.
After the soft kiss, a sharp sensation pierced my neck, making a faint moan escape my lips.
Eugene chuckled lowly, licking my nape. The heat steadily rising made me twist my body and cross my legs. His lips gradually moved lower.
I knew in my mind this shouldn’t happen just because Hayden had betrayed me.
Yet, I couldn’t push Eugene away. I clung desperately to his large body that devoured me. It was my last act of rebellion.
A dizzying sensation turned my vision white. At least in that moment, my mind was filled solely with the sensations Eugene provided.
At some point, he had laid me on the bed, covering me with his large frame. I felt his hot desire near my abdomen.
He positioned himself between my legs, locking eyes with me.
“Hurry up and answer, Winter.”
His violet eyes, darkened further by desire, shone vividly.
“Beg me to save you.”
Eugene demanded an answer, biting gently at the curves revealed through my open clothes.
My hips twisted, and I let out a moan. His relentless movements made it impossible for me to keep my mind clear.
Save me, Eugene. Please.
Words that had lingered on my tongue now burst out, mingled with moans. As he intensified his movements, only incoherent cries escaped my lips.
An ecstasy I had never experienced swept through my body, a pleasure exchanged for fidelity to my husband.
Through my tears, Eugene’s smiling face blurred before me. I felt the satisfied satiation of a beast who had succeeded in his hunt.
