As Calix hurried irritably toward Lea’s tent, he was forced to stop because someone suddenly darted out in front of him.

“Ow!”

A woman with snow-white rabbit ears fell right in front of him.

“I-I’m sorry!”

Recognizing Calix, the woman bowed her head deeply and apologized. He immediately remembered who she was.

This woman was the one Lea had personally checked on.

With her head bowed, Lucy swallowed nervously. Her heart was pounding with tension, but she couldn’t miss this opportunity. The Commander-in-Chief of Cantabria disappeared somewhere every day and only returned when night had fallen.

She wanted to find out what he was up to, but since he always took only a few people with him, there was no way to discover anything.

She also desperately wanted to get close to him, but he only ever received guiding from Lea, leaving no opening. She had waited and waited for her chance and didn’t want to waste it now.

While staying here, Lucy had watched Lea guiding from time to time. Her rank seemed higher than the other Guides, but not overwhelmingly so.

If only she could make contact, she planned to seduce this Esper through guiding, but even after some time had passed, there was no response, which puzzled her.

Still, she couldn’t carelessly lift her head without permission, so Lucy waited.

“Hm, get up.”

“T-Thank you…”

Lucy tried to maximize her own charm, lowering her eyebrows as much as possible and glancing up to appear as pitiful and forlorn as she could.

Whenever she did this, even werebeast Espers who were generally cold toward Guides would usually let her off with a warning.

However, contrary to her expectations, Calix simply looked down at Lucy in silence. Moreover, his gaze was glacial.

“Uh…”

“Can’t you even get up by yourself?”

“No.”

Standing a step away, Calix watched as Lucy slowly got up, mocking her inwardly. He had never allowed any contact with a Guide other than Lea.

The only reason he was tolerating this obvious act was because Lea seemed to care about Lucy.

Even when he was away for strategic reasons, Calix never stopped keeping track of what was going on in the camp. With his maximized wind ability, he could eavesdrop on the soldiers’ conversations whenever he wished, and even without using his powers, he could learn everyone’s movements through his subordinates’ reports.

That’s why he knew how much attention Lea was paying to the werebeast Guides, and among them, this white rabbit was the one she was most concerned about.

“I have something I’m curious about.”

At Calix’s question, Lucy tensed up. Even though he wasn’t releasing any energy, the pressure he gave off was no joke. It was so similar to the presence of the one she served that Lucy had to struggle to steady herself.

“Yes, please ask.”

“I heard that, although you’re a werebeast, you’re not a Guide who participated in the war. Is that correct?”

“Yes, that’s true…”

“Then, why are you still here? We don’t just round up werebeasts indiscriminately.”

She was trying to brace herself until now, but Lea was soon thrown off by the unexpected question. She’d thought they would welcome a Guide joining their forces with open arms, not ask something like this.

“Well…”

“Of course, I know you’ve been dedicated to helping our soldiers.”

As he stepped back slightly, Lucy finally thought of an excuse.

“The truth is, I had a promise with my late mother. She said that if someone does you a favor, you have to repay it even more. The one who saved me when I collapsed in this cold north was none other than a Cantabrian soldier. So, I just wanted to repay that kindness.”

Lucy was relieved her mind finally kicked into gear. As she let out a sigh of relief inside, Calix asked another question.

“Why did you come to the north alone? I heard you were found collapsed not on the Leonis border, but within Cantabrian territory.”

“I, I got lost and didn’t know where I was. I’m sorry.”

“I’m not blaming you, so there’s no need to be so frightened.”

Lucy hadn’t even made contact yet, but Calix was showing a slightly friendly attitude, which gave her hope. As she was wondering how to seduce this Esper, she heard footsteps behind her.

The footsteps belonged to the person Lucy was most conscious of here. She didn’t even need to turn to know who it was.

And because this person was the one closest to Calix, she felt she had to act.

So Lucy deliberately pretended to stumble forward, as if she were going to fall into Calix’s arms.

But a transparent barrier blocked her.

From a distance, however, it would have looked as though the two were embracing.
