Chapter 2
She must have noticed the displeasure laced through his dark, imposing tone, yet the Princess simply remained sunny.
“It’s dangerous. Please come down.”
“No. I told you, I can’t sleep.”
The Princess pouted her lips and bounced on the balls of her feet. The gathered crowd gasped at her perilous act.
“Viern, why don’t you come up here too? The breeze is wonderfully cool up here.”
At the Princess’s tinkling laugh, thick veins rose on the back of the man’s clenched fists. Was she fearless, or simply witless? Did she not realize that a fall from that height could easily break something?
“If you come down quietly now, I will personally escort you back to your chambers.”
The man forced the words past his parched throat and spread his arms wide. Intrigued, the Princess widened her eyes.
“Really?”
“Yes, really.”
“And you’ll stay with me until I fall asleep?”
“Yes.”
“Alright!”
The Princess grinned brightly and nodded. Then, without a moment’s hesitation, she leapt toward the arms he had opened wide for her.
Gasp—!
At the Princess’s sudden action, everyone screamed. But the man remained calm, swiftly launching himself forward to catch her.
A soft, feminine form plunged solidly into the cradle of his thick arms. He held her body securely, checking for any injuries. In his ear, the Princess’s childish, carefree laughter rang sweetly. What was so amusing? The man let out the breath he’d been holding.
Suddenly, he became aware of the soft skin pressed against him. A faint wrinkle formed between the man’s brows as he realized the Princess wore nothing but a thin nightgown.
With every pass of the faint moonlight, the flimsy fabric revealed the pale skin, rounded curves, and even the distinct rosy peaks beneath. It didn’t stop there; the material was so sheer that if one looked closely enough, one could make out the small mole by her navel and the secret curls further below.
While the Princess’s antics were as frequent as breathing to everyone in the palace, letting them see her in this state was… less than ideal.
The man clenched his jaw and stripped off his outer coat, draping it over the Princess to shield her. His mood did not improve, even as she happily sniffed the fabric while pulling it around herself.
“Oh my, Your Highness! Are you alright?”
Those who had arrived belatedly rushed over to check on the Princess’s well-being.
“I will attend to Her Highness. You all, clean this up. And Aisen… we’ll talk at home.”
At the cool dismissal, Princess’s guard, Aisen Erkman, wore an aggrieved expression. However, the man turned away without the slightest interest in his youngest brother’s grievances—the one who, by his own orders, was suffering through the thankless task of cleaning up after that good-for-nothing princess.
Leaving behind the hushed whispers of the onlookers at his seemingly foul mood, the man carefully made his way, the Princess bundled in his coat. In stark contrast to his uncharacteristic displeasure, she, nestled against him and wiggling her toes, seemed in high spirits.
“What sort of mischief has possessed you today, Your Highness?”
“Mischief? What are you talking about?”
Her innocent tone of feigned ignorance was infuriating. This was not the first of the Princess’s antics. And the man knew exactly why she pulled these stunts to grab his attention every time. Her behavior—seeking his affection and diverting his focus whenever he took a woman to his chambers—was painfully transparent.
She had once cut a hole in his bedroom ceiling and fallen onto his canopy. Another time, she wielded swords from foreign dancers in a ‘sword dance’ and nearly took the head off an innocent noble lady. Then there was that rainy day when a woman had to be carried out unconscious after spotting the princess dangling outside the window, pounding frantically on the glass.
He’d told her to stop with these repeated escapades, and now today she pulls this adorable little stunt. Thanks to her, Viern Erkman had been involuntarily celibate for three years now. This made it twenty-seven failed attempts in total. He was counting in his head without even realizing he’d been keeping track of the number himself.
“I told you climbing to high places is dangerous.”
By now they had reached the Princess’s chambers, and Viern set her down gently on the plush bed as he spoke.
“Mhm, but you never said I couldn’t go on the roof.”
Diana answered with a sunny smile. It was hard to tell if she was being clever or foolish. His Princess never repeated a forbidden action twice, but instead invented new, outlandish methods. Lately, she seemed to have learned that threatening her own safety was the most effective way to get his attention, hence these repeated stunts.
“You may do whatever you wish,”
Viern said, leaning over her, his lowered voice carrying a threatening edge as he stared intently into her face.
“-but you must treat this body of yours as precious, must you not, Your Highness?”
The trouble she caused him was one thing; he could endure it all with this steadfast loyalty. But if her safety were truly endangered, that was an entirely different matter. Diana Rosenheir, now the kingdom’s sole heir—if something were to happen to her, the very foundation of the nation would shake.
“Viern, are you mad?”
“Yes, a little.”
