Chapter 7
‘Why are you causing a ruckus again? Scratching people and running through the corridors—you’re not a kitten.’
Diana felt terribly wronged by those words treating her like a wild baby beast. She hadn’t been trying to cause a ruckus. She simply didn’t like other people touching her body.
‘That woman touched me first in a way I didn’t like.’
‘If someone’s attending to you, of course they’ll touch you.’
‘Still, I don’t like other people touching me. Whatever this attending thing is, Viern can just do it.’
At that petulant defiance, Viern let out a short, incredulous laugh. After bathing her, feeding her, and putting her to bed on the first day, she now treated it as natural, trying to order him around like a servant.
‘I understand, so stop being angry and go to sleep now. I’ll attend to your sleep.’
‘But when I wake up, you’ll be gone again, won’t you?’
Diana glared at his profile as he tidied her bed and lit sleeping incense, retorting sullenly. How many times had this man put her to sleep and then vanished, only to reappear days later?
‘I’ll sit where you can see me and stay put.’
He pulled a chair to her bedside and sat down, gesturing for her to get under the covers. Diana obediently wriggled into the blankets while glaring at him fiercely.
‘Just try running away again.’
‘This is my home—where would I run to? Stop glaring so fiercely and close your eyes and sleep.’
Diana had tried to resist falling asleep, but she’d been completely fooled by that reassuring voice. Even as she surrendered to the drowsiness washing over her in waves, she’d definitely held tight to his sleeve to keep him from running away—yet when she opened her eyes in the morning, she was predictably alone. How infuriating.
Next time he appeared, she’d tie him up. First, she’d knock him unconscious by striking the back of his head, then tear down those curtains over there, twist them into a big rope… Diana was glaring at the curtain hanging by the window with such thoughts when—
“Viern?”
At the rustling sound, she turned her head and locked eyes with a man peeking at her from the doorway. But she soon realized this man wasn’t Viern but someone else. The black hair and blue eyes resembled the man who’d brought her here, but this one looked younger, gentler, and more dull-witted.
Diana’s eyes instantly sharpened. Since she hadn’t completely lowered her guard toward strangers, her suppressed aggression immediately burst forth.
Thud!
Grabbing the vase from the side table, she chased after the startled, fleeing man and hurled what she held without hesitation.
Crash!
“H-Hiiik?”
The man flinched at the vase shards thrown before him. In that moment, Diana caught up and grabbed him, throwing him to the ground.
“Ahhh! P-Please spare me…!”
The man surrendered in utter terror, but Diana didn’t stop, swinging her fists. He could have fought back if he’d wanted to, but the man just curled up with both arms covering his head. Even without the estate’s prohibition against laying hands on her, he was the type who couldn’t bring himself to strike a woman.
Diana intimidated the man who’d been spying on her and learned several useful pieces of information—namely, where this place was and how she’d come to be here.
It apparently wasn’t much of a secret, as the man explained readily while glancing at her nervously, worried she might turn aggressive again. This was the Erkman ducal estate in the capital, and not long ago there’d been a great fire at the palace and soldiers had been coming and going in complete chaos, and on that day his older brother had brought her here…
“Older brother?”
“Yes, Viern Erkman.”
The man looked at Diana as if that name alone explained everything.
“……?”
“You don’t know Erkman?”
But at Diana’s blank expression that followed, he asked back in bewilderment. The House of Erkman was the most powerful noble family in the Kingdom of Laurelai.
‘Did he bring her from some countryside village?’
The man glanced at Diana’s body. The scars scattered across it kept drawing his eye. Surely she wasn’t a woman illegally brought from a forbidden slave market or something.
“Uh… and my name is Aisen. I’m Viern’s younger brother and…”
Aisen, the youngest brother of Duke Erkman, introduced himself, but unfortunately, Diana—who had absolutely no interest in him—simply stared blankly with an expression that said, ‘I didn’t ask about that.’ Feeling awkwardly self-conscious for no reason, Aisen casually asked who she was.
“Who am I?”
Diana tilted her head. She couldn’t answer either. Because she didn’t know who she was. Apart from having lived imprisoned in a lightless tower since early childhood—too young to even remember—she knew absolutely nothing about herself.
However, the very next day, Diana learned who she was after twenty years.
“This is Princess Diana, daughter of His Majesty King Axion and Her Majesty Queen Anais.”
Viern brought Diana to the palace and announced her before the people. Having been bathed and groomed from early morning under Viern’s supervision—though it was closer to surveillance to ensure she didn’t harm the servants again—Diana blinked vacantly amid people’s shocked stares, not even knowing that what she sat upon was the king’s throne.
