Chapter 4
His constant nuzzling had left my cheeks wet. Annoyed, I wiped the saliva-streaked mess from my face while blaming him.
“I don’t understand. It’s been two days; why hasn’t it worn off yet?”
It had been 48 hours since Edgar took the love potion I made.
He was known for his resilience—almost a walking magic stone—Edgar’s body could neutralize deadly toxins within a day. So, I had expected the potion’s effects to have faded by now.
But every time he looked at me, his pupils still danced with hearts filled with love.
It seems my potion-making skills had surpassed my expectations, possibly even surpassing those of my teacher. While it was gratifying to realize I had exceeded my teacher, never had my exceptional skills felt so tragically ironic.
“Sorry.”
Recognizing the irritation in my gaze, Edgar finally backed off after kissing me incessantly like a dog marking its territory.
He slumped his shoulders and apologized weakly, not even fully understanding why I was upset. His pathetic demeanor was a stark contrast to his flashy lewdness just days before.
“No, you don’t need to apologize…”
Truthfully, I was also to blame for greedily creating a forbidden potion. Neither of us had anticipated that my potion-making skills had developed to such a potent extent.
“Do you hate me now, Chloe?” Edgar asked cautiously.
I had made the love potion upon request, but this was the first time I had directly observed its effects on someone.
It was both curious and strange to see a typically indifferent person get so unsettled and desperate. His face and voice were the same, yet he felt like a stranger, almost as if he wasn’t the person I knew.
“How could I hate you for something like this?”
“That’s a relief.”
Unable to take his gaze away from my cheeks, which were blushing a delicate pink, Edgar suddenly confessed his feelings.
“Chloe, after taking the potion you made, I realized something. Until now, my life has been nothing but a cowardly series of escapes. Everything felt meaningless. And if you were to leave, I’d truly have nothing left.”
Then, with a hesitant smile, Edgar continued.
“That’s why I want to start expressing my feelings honestly from now on.”
His voice, whispering softly, contained everything I had longed to hear. How could I get angry at words like these? It was cowardly.
“…”
The coward was me.
“Chloe?”
Edgar, who had shyly confessed, looked at me quizzically. His face was clearly worried in a way that was unusual for him. The swell of emotions that had been building up felt like they were about to burst out.
The way ‘love potions’ induce love is similar to an illusion spell, but even more artificial. The magic within the potion deceives the user’s brain and altered their feelings.
Even though Edgar was professing his love, it was only because of the potion. It has nothing to do with his true desires.
“I don’t know. I’m tired, so please don’t cling to me.”
I knew it wasn’t Edgar’s fault, but I couldn’t control my emotions. It was Edgar who had taken the potion, not me, yet the situation was inexplicably overwhelming.
“Are you very tired?”
As I entered my room and lay down on the bed, Edgar approached cautiously, his actions were like a dog following its owner, albeit without making any whining sounds. The fact that he was doing things he would never normally do, influenced by the potion, only increased my irritation.
“I’m going to sleep.”
“But it’s still the middle of the day?”
“I said I’m going to sleep. Don’t disturb me.”
As I pulled up the blanket and turned my back, Edgar hesitantly stopped advancing.
He was unusually tall for a wizard—who are often stereotyped as frail—Edgar stood out in any crowd as his height far surpassed most. His dark shadow loomed over me as he came close.
But if I don’t look at him, it’s as if he isn’t there.
“Chloe.”
I ignored Edgar’s pitiful calling and pulled the blanket over my head.

That day was certainly unique.
“What’s all this?”
After mindlessly heading out to run an errand Edgar had requested at the market, I returned to find a table set with a meal that looked like it belonged at a fancy party.
