I used to brush off such things easily in the past, but now, why was it so irritating?

“Please be careful on your way back, Madam.”

I forced a smile as I saw off the noblewoman and returned to the cabin. The sensation of her lingering presence following me like a thorn in my finger was almost unbearable, but I did my best to ignore it.

“Promise me that after you wake up after taking it, you’ll still think of me like you do now.”

My gamble of a lifetime failed.

When Edgar returned to his senses after taking the antidote, he trembled as if he were a patient recovering from a severe illness, unsure of what to do, and spun around in confusion. It seemed like he was overwhelmed by the memories of what he had done, unable to comprehend his actions.

After a while, he immediately used teleportation magic to bring me back to our cabin. There are probably very few humans who can use such magic from one end of the continent to the other, and Edgar is likely one of them.

It was absurd. I was so upset about not having had the chance to thank the mercenaries who had traveled with us or even Orzen, who had helped us, and he got angry with me.

“Is that really important right now?”

It was the first time I had seen Edgar look so serious. I could understand why he was so shocked. Although I didn’t understand why he had taken the potion I had made, it was clear that he had lost his sanity after consuming the love potion.

I hadn’t anticipated his reaction, though I was relieved he wasn’t more upset. I tried to understand his feelings as much as possible and gave him space to calm down.

“Can you pass me the pepper?”

“What?”

From then on, it was like this.

Clatter!

As Edgar reached for the pepper shaker next to him, he seemed startled by how close we had gotten and gasped, flinging his elbow back. This caused the tablecloth to slide, knocking over a plate that fell to the floor.

Startled by the loud noise, I closed my eyes momentarily, and when I opened them, the situation was already over. Fortunately, it was just an empty plate, so no food had spilled, but the floor and the atmosphere were still a mess.

“I-I’m sorry…”

The man, looking troubled as he gazed at the broken pieces of the plate, apologized clumsily.

“There’s nothing to apologize for. We both made a mistake.”

“No, it’s my fault.”

His tone, as he looked down at the floor with an air of disinterest, suggested he didn’t really want to talk. It wasn’t like him at all; these small accidents had become more frequent.

The golem, drawn by the commotion, approached and tilted its head at the broken pieces. The rounded stones and gravel that made up its fists were not suited for delicate tasks like cleaning up glass shards.

Reluctantly, I was about to step in to dispose of the broken pieces.

“What if you hurt yourself?”

Edgar awkwardly got up from the table and waved his hands in the air. As if he didn’t want to touch anything, even me.

“No, it’s okay. I’ll do it.”

“No, I’ll do it.”

“Seriously, why are you being like this?”

The petty argument wasn’t helping at all. Then, I suddenly felt a slight pain and looked down at my hand. My fingers were tingling, and I noticed blood flowing from a small cut. Fortunately, it was just a minor scratch from the fall, nothing serious.

“You’re hurt.”

Edgar’s voice grew colder than before. It was as stern as when he used to teach me, back when I was an uncontrollable child.

He furrowed his brows and took out a clean cloth, usually kept for wiping fruit, from a basket. He carefully wrapped it around my finger and gently wiped away the blood.

It had been a long time since he had physically touched me, and it felt awkward. I couldn’t help but whine a little.

“It doesn’t really hurt.”

“Stop saying that…”

He seemed about to continue his nagging but quickly turned his head away.

“Get treated. I’ll clean up the rest.”

As Edgar forcibly made me sit in a chair and began cleaning up the broken pieces, there was an odd sensation. It wasn’t just now; ever since taking the antidote, something about his demeanor had been bothering me.

I couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong, so I couldn’t say anything.

Then, it suddenly dawned on me.

Since returning to the cabin, Edgar hadn’t once looked me in the eye.
