Chapter 79
“That is. A confession.”
Celesto answered immediately.
Then he briefly kissed my lips again. Afterward, he whispered in a low voice.
“How about you, Roarna?”
“I, I…”
An uncharacteristically weak voice escaped me.
I had truly watched Celesto my entire life.
A frustrating man who, if he had even a little more social skills to make other friends, would have had no connection with me. A boring man who had never stepped outside the established framework his entire life.
That was Celesto Castanor.
Thoughts tangled complicatedly in my head. He wanted to deny every trajectory of his life and stay by my side. That he would do something so irrational.
Because he wanted to be with me.
A strange pressure pressed down on my chest.
To be honest, this wasn’t the first time I had received a confession like this—a gamble that risked his entire life.
There had definitely been men who said similar things.
But none of those words had ever touched me. Whether that person threw away their life or not, that was their choice and had nothing to do with me.
Rather, I found it somewhat unpleasant. Shoving a life I never asked for in my face and demanding acceptance.
But what Celesto was doing was different. My breath caught, and my heart raced like it was overloading.
Not because I liked it… but because I was worried.
I finally managed to speak.
“I’ve never… thought about that…”
A situation where you would throw away everything you’ve achieved just to have a woman.
Especially a situation where that woman is me.
My heart pounded violently. I was so worried and concerned that I even felt dizzy.
‘If you leave the Temple Knights, what will you do? The Count Castanor won’t help a son who has brought shame. Then, wouldn’t I be the only thing left for you? I don’t want that to happen to Celesto.’
One side of my chest felt tight. My heart clenched with a sense of helplessness I had never felt in my life.
The silence continued. Only the rattling vibrations of the carriage filled the silence between us.
“Haha.”
Just then, Celesto let out a short, dry laugh.
“…I thought so.”
He bowed his head deeply. His low, sinking voice escaped from lips I could no longer see.
“Though I had hoped otherwise.”
The strength slowly drained from the firm grip holding me.
Soon, Celesto set me down on the seat beside him. Then, after straightening his disheveled clothes, he pulled his hood down low.
Just then, the carriage’s speed decreased noticeably. It seemed we had arrived at a place where we needed to be quiet—our destination.
Whether he noticed, Celesto abruptly stood up.
Before I could stop him, he threw open the carriage door. Cold night air rushed in, scraping away the lingering heat inside the carriage.
Celesto glanced back at me.
“Get home safely.”
With that, he jumped out of the still-moving carriage. His disheveled clothes fluttered wildly.
Unable to say anything, I watched his large back disappear into the darkness.
The heart that had been pounding since earlier now throbbed painfully.
