Chapter 168
It was just a letter, but it filled her inside.
“So, it really is a letter from Ursik.”
Sebelia’s eyes brightened at the sight of the blue bird seal stamped on the corner of the envelope. She carefully tucked the small letter away like a precious gem.
“I’ll take this.”
Claude said as he stepped forward, carrying two parcels whose contents were unknown. Sebelia led the way out of the post office. The cool mountain air brushed against her cheek.
It felt refreshing.
“Haa.”
As she inhaled deeply, the warm excitement in her body began to cool. Sebelia realized then that she had been overly excited due to Denisa’s letter.
‘Oh no.’
Now that she thought about it, she had practically dragged Claude along earlier. Realizing this, a flush of heat spread across her face again. Biting her lip, Sebelia hesitated before stopping in her tracks.
“Bella?”
Claude asked why, and Sebelia turned to face him, her cheeks red with embarrassment as she apologized.
“I’m sorry for acting rudely. I must have embarrassed you by acting like a child. It’s not much of an excuse, but… I honestly thought I wouldn’t get a reply. I guess I got excited without realizing it.”
Sebelia gently wiped her reddened cheeks with the back of her hand and finally spoke. Her voice grew softer as she spoke, and Claude laughed, shaking his head.
“You don’t need to apologize. I completely understand. It’s the news you’ve been waiting for, right?”
“Yes.”
Sebelia nodded with a much relieved face. Seeing that, Claude smiled kindly at her and began walking again.
The official residence building gradually came into view. Sebelia quickened her pace, eager to return to her room and open Denisa’s letter. Noticing this, Claude smiled and matched her pace.
The feet that were moving like flying in the clouds came to a sudden halt, however, when an unexpected figure appeared.
“Did Baron Suffredi have a carriage?”
Claude murmured, clearly puzzled, as it didn’t seem likely he could afford one.
As he had guessed, the main street in front of the residence was filled with a large carriage. Four horses were hitched to an opulent white carriage, pounding the cobblestones with their hooves.
‘Is she determined to stick around?’
Claude frowned. Though he hadn’t been able to talk much with Dehart due to his guise as Karl Appenz, he had a rough idea of what was going on.
The humble Baron Suffredi, who was content with managing his lands modestly, wasn’t one to engage in such conspicuous actions. It was likely his ambitious daughter, Licia, who was behind this.
His suspicion soon turned into reality. As the coachman jumped down from the driver’s seat and opened the carriage door, Licia appeared.
Licia, with her elegant black hair styled delicately and her white neck exposed, looked like a beautiful and noble white lily. The silvery-white dress that gently wrapped around her body was understated yet elegant.
“Be careful, Miss.”
As Licia, escorted by a maid, set foot on the ground, her eyes met Sebelia’s.
“Oh my.”
With a smile, Licia gave a slight nod toward Sebelia before straightening her posture. The estate manager soon rushed out to greet her.
“Welcome, Miss. We’ve just heard you are going to take a rest.”
“Perfect timing.”
Guided by the estate manager, Licia naturally disappeared into the estate, her entrance resembling that of a long-absent family member returning home.
“Let’s go in, Bella.”
Claude’s words made Sebelia realize that she had been staring blankly at the spot where Licia had vanished. She nodded, clutching her bag with the letter inside.
“Yes, that’s right.”
As she stepped inside, the vibrant air greeted her. Whispering voices from the other side seemed filled with joy, likely because they hoped for Licia and Dehart’s success.
Her hand gripping the stair railing turned pale.
* * *
Sebelia’s assumption turned out to be correct. The servants of Barony Suffredi, sent by Licia’s command, were all hoping for her and Dehart to become romantically involved.
“If we have a connection with Inverness, it’ll be easy for Suffredi to revive.”
“That’ll be the time when Miss Licia’s era begins.”
The revival of the family and territory. Baron Suffredi’s expansion to the center. These hopes were no different from Licia’s desires that were adopted by the servants as their own wishes, and they longed for it to come true.
The fact that Dehart’s identity and his stay here hadn’t leaked outside was actually due to this—Licia, wanting to monopolize him, had strictly controlled the servants’ mouths.
Along with that, Dehart’s appearance, growing increasingly haggard due to the guilt he felt toward Sebelia, further fueled the servants’ petty sense of superiority.
‘A noble from the North, blessed by Miss Licia’s favor.’
The closed-minded people of Suffredi, who knew nothing of the North, had come to think this way. And so, with no qualms of conscience, they provided every detail of Dehart’s actions for Licia.
“I heard the Duke is resting. Surely, he will meet with the Miss this time?”
And this was the result. The estate manager, as if it was natural, asked them to open the door for Licia.
“Do you even know what you’re saying right now? Huh?”
Leaving Dehart, who was barely holding on to his sanity through despair and self-loathing, behind in his office, Eli was so stunned by this that he couldn’t find the words to respond.
