Chapter 187
Could it be that this encounter wasn’t just a coincidence?
From the looks of it, Sebelia didn’t seem too shocked by Dehart’s appearance either.
As Denisa’s tension eased, the crackling sparks that had been flickering threateningly began to fade. The narrow alley was once again cloaked in darkness and silence.
Breaking the frozen stillness was Dehart. He gazed at Sebelia and spoke softly.
“The night air is cold. I think it’s best if we head back for now.”
“……”
“If you wish, that woman there can stay with us at the residence. Though, of course, she’d have to have a separate room.”
Referring to Denisa, Dehart slightly furrowed his brows but then shrugged as if it meant nothing. Meanwhile, Denisa gave him a strange look before glancing at Sebelia.
If one took Dehart’s words at face value… it meant that the lady she served had been sharing the same space as Dehart until now.
“Miss, that’s not right, is it?”
“……”
“My goodness!”
Denisa sighed in disbelief. Sebelia shook her head and gently reassured her.
“It’s not what you think. I wasn’t forcibly held or threatened, so you really don’t need to worry.”
“This situation right now……”
Denisa faltered, struggling to find words. Growing impatient, Dehart interjected. He couldn’t afford to waste time here, not knowing what schemes Silas might be plotting.
“Bella, you should return to the residence first.”
“No, no. The Miss will be leaving with me.”
Regaining her composure, Denisa panted as she spoke.
“It’s more dangerous if you stay with the Duke. Even now, you need to go somewhere with no people and stay with me. That’s the safest option.”
At that, Dehart’s expression instantly changed. Lowering his body like a beast hiding in the bushes, his voice dropped as he cornered Denisa.
“You say it’s dangerous with me? I wonder where you heard such nonsense. I’ve been the one protecting Bella while you were away.”
In truth, Denisa hadn’t been able to stay by Sebelia’s side because of Dehart himself, but unaware of that, he accused her with great confidence.
“Let’s hear it then. And unlike last time, don’t even think about running away—I won’t be giving you my side to hide behind.”
At the unexpected mention of a ‘side,’ Sebelia tilted her head in confusion as she watched the two. Denisa let out a weary groan and sighed deeply.
Right—she’d only managed to escape Dehart because he had let his guard down. Now that he was alert and Sebelia had no intention of running, trying to resist would get them nowhere.
After gathering her thoughts, Denisa spoke in a noticeably calmer voice.
“…Understood. We can’t keep the Miss standing in this cold alley forever.”
“A day when you and I see eye to eye—now that’s something that’ll shake the heavens. We’ve wasted the whole night on such useless talk, but since the outcome’s good, I guess that’s something. I’ll lead the way, so don’t wander off and follow closely.”
Denisa frowned at the sharp words that shot out the moment she gave in. Every sentence was twisted with spite… it seemed the grudge from being bested by her before still lingered deeply.
“Bella, if you feel tired or anything wrong with your body while walking, don’t hesitate to tell me. I’ll send that maid ahead to the residence to fetch the coach.”
Denisa’s face twisted in confusion at Dehart’s tone—mocking her with biting remarks, yet speaking with unparalleled kindness to Sebelia.
“…Seems like you really weren’t being threatened, after all.”
“I told you so.”
Following behind him, the two whispered quietly to each other.
* * *
Unlike the cold wind sweeping through the alley outside, a warm atmosphere filled the office. Denisa looked at Dehart across from her with a tense face.
He actually apologized to the Miss?
After settling their things at the residence and eating, Denisa heard all of Sebelia’s accounts of what had happened.
The nerve of him.
Honestly, she wanted to curse him out immediately… but she had no right to do so. That belonged to Sebelia. So Denisa had to suppress her boiling anger, contenting herself with tightly holding Sebelia’s hand beside her.
Feeling that worried warmth, Sebelia asked Dehart.
“So… what was the urgent reason for finding me like this?”
Dehart parted his lips, glanced at Denisa, and seemed hesitant to speak in her presence. But seeing the two holding hands, he sighed as if resigned.
“Marquis Wheddon…”
At that moment, Denisa gripped her hand tightly and interrupted urgently.
“Could it be that news has already spread here?”
“What?”
“That advertisement—the one the Marquis put out! The crazy stunt of plastering the Miss’s face all over every newspaper claiming he’s looking for her!”
