The capital, Lang Elisa, held a special meaning for Sebelia. Although she had spent most of her life there before heading north, she actually knew very little about it.

“To think I can stroll through the capital without any interference—it still doesn’t feel real.”

Sebelia was having tea with Denisa after their meal. As her cheeks flushed with a mix of nervousness and excitement, Denisa sighed.

Maybe it’s better to have her relocate somewhere safer right now.

As of this morning, Sebelia had officially become Bella Appenz, the niece of Karl Appenz. This meant she now had a safety net to block Silas’s ridiculous schemes, at least temporarily.

Still, unease lingered.

“Miss, perhaps you should observe the situation a little longer? Even though your identity registration is complete, it’s just an administrative process. It won’t stop crowds from gathering or people acting coercively.”

“That’s why I’m here, to stop exactly that. Do you really think those scrawny Wheddon guards can stand up to the knights of Inverness?”

The voice dropped coldly. Denisa couldn’t help but press her lips shut. Outside the large window of the sitting room where they drank tea, Dehart stood proudly.

“Good morning, Bella. Hope you slept well. If you want, I can move Claude and Watts’ rooms farther away.”

“No need. Mr. Claude is now my uncle, and Mr. Watts is my doctor. But why do your sleeves look like that? They’re completely covered in dirt.”

Sebelia asked suspiciously. Dehart’s eyes gleamed as he suddenly extended something through the open window—a freshly cut, dew-laden bouquet of hydrangeas.

“I couldn’t sleep last night, so I stopped by the garden for a moment. The color reminded me of…”

The blue flowers sparkled as clearly and brightly as Sebelia’s eyes. Denisa swallowed hard, thinking Dehart had gone mad with such a blatant gesture.

But then Sebelia’s next words made Denisa briefly pity him.

“Oh, these are just the pruned leftovers? Why bring flowers you’re just going to discard?”

Sebelia tilted her head, and Dehart stiffened. As if confirming, she added,

“By the way, you really like flowers, don’t you? You never gave up that hobby even at the lab. Is there a greenhouse here too?”

“Yes, there is.”

“Ah, then I won’t go there when I take walks. Don’t want to interfere with your hobby.”

Dehart’s plan to charm her with flowers resembling her eye color was utterly ruined by the terrible things he had done in the past.

“I.”

There’s no way you would be a disturbance from me. I wouldn’t give you discarded flowers. I just thought you seemed uneasy and wanted to cheer you up a bit. Why would you think otherwise…?

Ah.

Fragments of the past pierced his heart like shards of glass. Feeling terrible pain, Dehart slowly closed and opened his eyes.

He couldn’t speak. What could he possibly say now? No excuse could heal the wounds she had already suffered.

The lively, sunlit eyes clouded over like a stormy sky. The bouquet of carefully picked, beautiful flowers trembled weakly.

“Dehart, what’s wrong?”

A gentle voice echoed near his ear. He barely held back showing his disheveled face and lowered his head.

A surge of bitterness rose within him, followed by deep despair. How dare he feel wronged by Sebelia? Swallowing a hot sigh, he lowered the hand holding the bouquet.

“It’s nothing. Like you said… I just stopped by to show them briefly before discarding them away. Don’t mind me.”

Forcing a smile, Dehart lifted his head. His gaze met Denisa’s across the room. The sympathy in her eyes made him almost grit his teeth.

Taking a deep breath, Dehart admitted his mistake. It was his fault for acting without understanding the situation. Calming his wild emotions, he addressed Sebelia’s puzzled look.

“Actually, I came to remind you about tonight’s appointment. Remember, we’re going to the opera house?”

“Oh, about that… Are we really going to the Elisha Grand Theater? The largest one in the Empire?”

Sebelia asked, her voice a mix of hope and anxiety. Having never been outside the house, she was both excited and afraid to visit a place she had only heard about.

Dehart smiled.

“Of course. It’s basically ‘Bella Appenz’s’ debutante ball. We can’t let your official first appearance be anywhere but the grand theater.”
