At the end of his gaze lay Sebelia, pale-faced and eyes closed.

“Seeing you like this reminds me of the funeral.”

Silas chuckled softly and brushed Sebelia’s cheek. She moaned weakly and then steadied her breathing. Silas slightly turned his head and looked at Nathan.

“So, what did the First Queen say?”

“She was glad to hear the news. She had been troubled a lot because of the Second Prince.”

“That illusionist was more useful than even expected.”

Silas added quietly, “Just like me.” A satisfied smile curved on his lips as he looked down at Sebelia.

“Far more effective than the northern shamans. Had I known, I wouldn’t have ordered you to clean up the mess.”

“Are you talking about her birth mother?”

“Yes. She was an illusionist too.”

Silas spoke with a hint of regret.

“She bore the child and left. She must have survived the attack. Had I known, I might have kept her as a concubine, gently coaxing her.”

“…That might’ve made things easier.”

Nathan nodded and continued.

“If that woman, the birth mother, had made a proxy for the Emperor, the succession battle wouldn’t have dragged on this long.”

“Probably not.”

Silas shook his head disdainfully at his still inadequate son. Nathan stared at him wide-eyed.

“If that were true, the Second Prince would’ve already taken down the ailing Emperor. Seems like wizards each specialize in different fields.”

“So you’re saying Sebelia is the only one who can create human-like illusions?”

Nathan pointed at Sebelia in shock, unwilling to believe it. Silas nodded.

“So treat her well. At least there won’t be childish pranks like before.”

Nathan turned away without replying. Silas raised an eyebrow but refrained from scolding him. If he had recognized and properly managed Sebelia’s potential early on, things wouldn’t have gotten so complicated.

Sebelia’s ability was called illusion magic, though unlike other magic, it was little known to the public.

Thus, illusion magic had long been viewed as something ominous and suspicious. Even those who knew a little about it found it hard to overcome that prejudice.

I was no different.

Silas frowned. He had seen Sebelia’s mother often create butterfly-like illusions but didn’t care much. It was only the ability of an apprentice wizard at best.

That was until the young illusionist recently hired by the Second Prince blocked all assassins sent against them and launched counterattacks.

So this is why information is so important. We always thought illusionists were no better than northern shamans…

Silas clicked his tongue in regret. Had he known illusion magic was so extensive and sophisticated, he would have captured and kept her instead of disposing of her.

At least it’s fortunate we got something, but still, what a shame.

As Silas brooded over his failure, Nathan grimaced and turned his head. His angry gaze raised Silas’s eyebrows.

“But father, isn’t it a problem if it’s a human-like illusion?”

“What do you mean?”

“How can we tell if the figure lying there is an illusion or a real person?”

Nathan jabbed a finger at Sebelia, raising his voice. Silas felt as if hit by a hammer.

* * *

“Ugh…”

When Sebelia woke up, drenched in cold sweat, it was well past dawn. She shook her head involuntarily.

“Crazy. Truly crazy.”

Her body trembled and her face was dazed. Through the shared illusion, she had overheard the entire conversation between Silas and Nathan and understood their intentions.

They planned to create an imperial proxy using illusions—an act of rebellion itself. And the first princess was involved in this plan. What on earth was going on?

Succession war…!

She clenched her teeth and pushed back the blanket.

Learning Silas’s plan was a major gain, but that wasn’t the priority now.

[How can we tell if the figure lying there is an illusion or a real person?]

They had to recapture Sebelia from Marquis Wheddon’s estate as soon as possible—before the truth that she was a fake came out!
