It’s not like those words were meant for me.

Sebelia knew that Dehart’s sharp remarks must have been rooted in his guilt toward Rosalyn. Unlike Claude, Dehart had genuinely believed Rosalyn was dead.

Thinking back, it was actually a rather bitter situation. At the time, Dehart was just a child who’d lost his parents, the same as Rosalyn. And yet, because he didn’t know she was alive, because he hadn’t searched for her, he’d become the object of resentment.

“I’m sorry… I just can’t seem to control myself right now.”

He stammered, opening his eyes and looking pale as he tried to apologize.

Sebelia stopped him.

“No, don’t say that. I was out of line. I shouldn’t have inserted myself into someone else’s family issues so carelessly. If I hurt you, I apologize.”

“No, Bella, please don’t say that.”

Dehart blurted as he sat up, his thoughts a mess. Calling her intervention a rude intrusion—such words shouldn’t exist between them.

Everything she did was always welcome to him. Even if she forced him to stay by her side—or, unlikely as it was, locked him away—he’d probably be grateful for it. So…

“Never apologize to me. Even if you one day drew a sword against me, even if that day ever really comes, I’d still never want your apology.”

“…..”

“Because none compared to the things I’ve done.”

Surprised by the weight of his words, Sebelia’s eyes grew wide. Dehart, too, looked at her with a tightly knit brow.

“Maybe that was too heavy-handed. I just wanted you to know… it’s not you who ever hurt me. Ugh, ah… This isn’t what I meant to say.”

He gave a weak laugh and took Sebelia’s hand in his own.

“Still, you’ll stay with me, right? I’m not feeling well, Bella. If you’re not here, I might just collapse again.”

There was a glimmer in Sebelia’s eyes as Dehart gently guided her hand to his cheek and whispered,

“I told you, didn’t I? If you say anything just to keep me by your side, I’ll listen.”

Her heart skipped a beat. The tension from their almost-argument moments before became insignificant.

As Sebelia unconsciously bit the inside of her cheek, Dehart groaned softly.

“Ugh.”

The pain seemed to be coming back. It must have been pretty intense—he was sweating. Sebelia’s eyes were filled with worry. She bit her lip, then summoned Etira with a quiet command.

“Go fetch Mr. Watts.”

“There’s no need. I’ll feel better if I just lie here with you.”

Dehart’s low words only made Sebelia’s face harden in determination. Ignoring him, she sent Etira flitting off through the air.

Peep!

After circling over Dehart, Etira shot straight for the hallway. Dehart looked as if he wanted to protest, but instead just clutched his head and slumped back in the chair, his pain only growing worse.

“I think we should cancel tomorrow’s plans.”

“That’s not possible.”

Dehart said with eyes barely open but refusing to give in.

Tomorrow, they were scheduled to visit the detained Nathan Wheddon and conduct an interrogation using Sebelia’s illusion magic. They needed to locate the missing victims’ bodies, and, if possible, gather evidence that Nathan had acted under Silas’ orders.

“We worked so hard to get approval. I can’t just waste the opportunity because of me. I’m sorry for making you worry.”

Illusion magic was only just becoming recognized. If it weren’t for Shateian and his assistant Ludmil, who was also known as an illusionist, Sebelia would never have gotten this chance.

Most investigators and the Public Security were still skeptical about the accuracy and reliability of using illusions for questioning.

With that thought, Sebelia realized that she actually had every right to accept his apology.

Now that I think about it, if I postpone the interrogation, I’m basically undermining my own credibility.

If she looked at things objectively, here’s how it stood:

Claude and Dehart had both always acted like overprotective mentors, endlessly meddling in the name of concern. But now, with something so serious ahead, both were suddenly showing the opposite attitude.

In particular, Dehart had neglected his own health to the point that she was the one thinking of cancelling tomorrow’s plan.

Honestly, I think I have a right to be mad about this.

And, she decided that she could take back her earlier apology about meddling in his family affairs.

As Sebelia wrestled with these thoughts, Watts entered the study.

“Sebelia, is something wrong? Etira’s been pecking at my head nonstop since earlier.”

“Ah, you’re here. Dehart is suffering from a severe headache. I think he’ll need a sedative—could you take a look?”

“Good thing I brought my medical kit. Let’s have you lie down, shall we?”

Half an hour later, Watts had given him a stabilizer he’d mixed himself, saying it should ease the pain. Meanwhile, Sebelia had arranged for a servant to bring in food.

“Eat.”

He hesitated, but finally began to eat, looking every bit the part of a bedridden patient. After all her efforts to get him healthy, here he was, back at square one.

Pouring lukewarm water into his glass, Sebelia frowned. She decided that they needed to get him to the palace soon.
