Time passed quickly. Sebelia rode with Dehart in the carriage bound for the imperial palace.

“I’ll see you when you get back.”

Claude couldn’t join them on this trip. As ‘ordinary’ Karl Appenz rather than illusionist Claude, he wasn’t authorized to take part in Nathan Wheddon’s interrogation.

The carriage rolled through the palace gates and stopped at a shadowy corner where the security prison tower stood—where Nathan was being held.

“Welcome, Duke Inverness. Miss Bella Appenz. We’re counting on you today.”

A man who looked like a police official greeted them. Sebelia glanced around at the bleak surroundings, then said,

“Nathan Wheddon must be in that tower, I presume?”

He might be a notorious murderer, but he was still the eldest son and heir of a prestigious family. There was no way Silas would let him languish in a damp, filthy dungeon.

“Yes, that’s correct. The guard will escort you up. That’s all for now.”

He removed his hat, saluted, and turned away. His clipped words and cold demeanor made it obvious he didn’t think much of them.

Well, nothing to be done if they dislike me.

Sebelia thought with a bitter smile.

She’d heard there’d been a lot of resistance within the police to using illusions in Nathan’s interrogation, and Prince Shateian had pushed the decision through by force.

Since it’s come to this, I need to get evidence that can not only solve the remaining victim cases, but also implicate Silas himself.

She had no idea how many times she’d have to return to this place, but she was determined not to give up. As Sebelia gathered her resolve, someone began descending from the tower above.

Creeeak—

With a jarring screech of metal, a heavy door swung open and a guard appeared to escort them.

“This way, please.”

Sebelia and Dehart followed him inside.

“There’s sunlight here, but it still feels so cold.”

“That’s no surprise. Plenty of people have lived and died here, never setting foot outside these walls.”

Sebelia’s eyes widened. Dehart offered her his arm to help her climb the stairs and whispered,

“Nathan might have actually preferred the dungeon to this place. Down there, you either die or get out, one way or another. The tower… isn’t so simple.”

“That’s grim.”

“That’s how the upper power operate.”

The guard, who must have heard their conversation, made no comment and just led them wordlessly up the stairs. Finally, when they stopped in front of a steel door, he turned to Sebelia.

“This is the room.”

He handed her a key and took a step back, as if eager to put some distance between them.

“I’ll be back to unlock the door in one hour, as agreed. If anything happens, just pull the bell cord inside. That’s all.”

With that curt explanation, the guard quickly disappeared. Sebelia pressed the key tightly in her palm before sliding it into the lock.

Click.

“Mmmph, uh… uhh!”

As the door opened, she heard muffled, incomprehensible noises from inside. Drawing a deep breath, Sebelia strode confidently into the room.

There, trussed to a chair and gagged, sat Nathan. He thrashed about, slamming the chair legs against the floor in a wild rage.

“Ha.”

Sighing, Sebelia shook her head as if genuinely unimpressed. At the same time, Nathan only got wilder.

“Dehart.”

“Hm?”

“Isn’t there any way to quiet down our guest?”

Sounding as if she’d really had enough, Sebelia glanced at him. Dehart smiled and stepped forward.

“Of course. In fact, I could make sure he doesn’t even open his eyes for the next two days if you want. Should I?”

“Oh, no need for that. I don’t want the security seizing on some excuse to blame us.”

Dehart nodded and walked closer. As he approached, Nathan’s wild struggling faltered and his eyes filled with disbelief.

Didn’t expect this inside the tower, did he?

Honestly, these pampered types always expected everything to go their way. Dehart shot him a cold smile, circled behind, and Nathan started whimpering like a cornered animal.

“Sorry, but I might be mad, just not enough to speak ‘dog.’”

With that, Dehart delivered a sharp blow to Nathan’s neck. Nathan didn’t even have time to gasp before he slumped in the chair, unconscious.

“Ready when you are, Bella.”

Dehart said gently, wiping his hand with a handkerchief. By then, Sebelia was already laying her hand on Nathan’s shoulder, preparing to begin.

“All right, let’s get started…”
