Dehart frowned and looked away, but Sebelia doggedly tracked his gaze.

“So, you’re still getting rejected, right?”

Unable to win the staring contest, Dehart finally sighed and slumped back in his chair.

“You’re half right, half wrong. I’m being ignored.”

Sebelia’s brow furrowed slightly.

“They’re being even more defensive than I expected. Maybe he wants to see the will, but won’t risk sending Rosalyn… Or maybe he thinks it’s a trap.”

Dehart let out a slow breath, tilting his head back.

“Either way, we do need to meet Rosalyn—”

Not just to settle the inheritance dispute, but for Claude’s sake, too. Dehart knew that unless there was a definitive answer, Claude would never stop blaming himself.

Claude had always showered both Dehart and Rosalyn with more affection than even their parents had. It was no wonder that, just because Rosalyn’s body was never found, he’d spent all those years secretly hoping she might still be alive.

I never even considered the possibility she’d survived.

Realistically, the odds of a young girl surviving alone in a dark, rainy forest were close to zero. The fact that Dehart himself had been found alive was already a miracle. For Rosalyn, who was even younger at the time… the chance was even slimmer.

“I brought a few things from Hillend Hall—not just the will, but other items Rosalyn and the Third Prince seem interested in these days. Why don’t we take a look—?”

Before he could finish, footsteps echoed down the hall. Sebelia glanced up as someone knocked at the door.

Two neat clean knocks, followed by Claude’s familiar voice.

“Come in.”

“Oh, you’re both here! That’s perfect.”

Claude actually seemed excited for once.

“What’s going on?”

“I caught a glimpse of Rosalyn at the auction house, and I heard she’s going to the opera tonight. So, I immediately found out which show, and bought tickets.”

He looked positively thrilled. He’d been brainstorming ways to see Rosalyn ever since he’d watched all their invitations get rejected.

But until now, nothing had worked.

“You sound pretty confident this time.”

“Of course! I even managed to get us seats in the box right across from hers.”

He held up a luxurious, red ticket with gold embossing. Sebelia tilted her head.

“Isn’t it hard to get a box seat at the Grand Theatre?”

“Oh, I have my ways.”

His trips around the capital weren’t just to pass the time. But some details he preferred not to share with Sebelia so he gave a vague explanation.

“Well, we’d better start getting ready, then.”

Dehart stood up, clearly seeing through his uncle’s evasions. Sebelia followed, still looking a little puzzled.

“I’ll have the carriage brought around. Come down once you’re ready, and let’s take those items with us.”

“Right, good idea.”

As the subject shifted, Claude let out a silent sigh of relief and gave Dehart a quick wink. As usual, Dehart ignored it and focused instead on escorting Sebelia back to her room.

A short while later, the three of them descended the steps of the Elisa Grand Theatre. The driver tipped his head and drove the carriage away to the designated spot.

“I’m actually kind of nervous.”

Claude said, pressing a hand over his fluttering heart. Sebelia nodded.

If things went well, they might finally discover the truth about Rosalyn today.

“You brought everything, right?”

“Don’t worry.”

Dehart tapped his chest with a sly smile. The front of his jacket bulged ever so slightly.

He had the item Rosalyn had been so interested in lately, hastily fetched from Hillend Hall for tonight’s negotiation.

Let’s hope this goes well.

With an eager look, Sebelia took Dehart’s arm as they climbed the stairs, Claude trailing behind. Over her shoulder, she whispered.

“By the way, it’s impressive how resilient Sir Eli is. He just came back from Hillend Hall, and now he’s traveled all this way again.”

“To be precise, he only went as far as the checkpoint this time. And honestly, it’s not as impressive as it sounds. The one who really suffered was his poor horse.”

“Well, that’s true…”

Sebelia couldn’t argue. Odd as it sounded, it did make sense.

Before they knew it, they’d reached the top of the steps. The dazzling lights of the Elisa Grand Theatre washed over them. The triumphant return of the prima donna’s grand opera was about to begin.

Sebelia smiled as she spotted the flower-sellers at the entrance. But her calm quickly shifted back to nervous anticipation.
