The hand clutching the dagger was blackened, like it was burned—but Rosalyn was too distracted to pay attention to that detail.

“Ah, I knew it…”

Sebelia glanced over her shoulder, calm as ever, before facing forward again. Lady Fria seemed completely unconscious and unlikely to get up anytime soon.

Sebelia reached into her coat and pulled out a small box adorned with a velvet ribbon.

The radiant light—brighter than the sun—was emanating from that very box.

“This isn’t exactly how I planned to say it, but… Lady Rosalyn, would you mind talking with me for a moment?”

“What is this, even… No, what exactly is happening right now?”

Rosalyn, still dizzy, stared at Sebelia, who offered her a wry smile. Unwrapping the ribbon, Sebelia opened the box and spoke:

“First, let me assure you—unlike the young lady passed out over there, I’m not one for telling lies.”

“…”

“This is Yuria’s Bracelet—a sacred relic that’s been passed down for generations in Inverness.”

Inside the small box was a diamond bracelet, its exquisite craftsmanship was visible.

Yuria’s Bracelet. As Rosalyn repeated the name in her head, she recalled the stories attached to it.

“The sacred relic of protection, said to shield its bearer…”

Rosalyn muttered, still half in a daze.

“I heard you’ve been searching for relics like this, for reasons I don’t quite understand. So…”

A thunderous noise echoed from a distance—something being smashed or kicked with brute force, getting closer by the second. At last, Dehart burst in, eyes blazing.

“Bella! Rosalyn!”

With a voice hot as molten iron, he swept both women into his arms, barking orders to the knights who followed him in:

“Bind the fallen one and take her to the estate. No guards, no police—don’t let anyone from the palace get involved! If anyone pushes back, give them my name and make them back down!”

His roar reverberated off the walls and ceiling. The knights obeyed without question, and Dehart quickly strode outside with the others.

“Is he outside?”

“He should have the carriage ready by now.”

Sebelia replied from a short distance away.

Only then did Rosalyn realize she was in Dehart’s arms. Somehow, while Sebelia walked by his side, she herself had ended up carried out of the lounge.

“We need to get you back to the estate immediately. You’re not well, Lady Rosalyn.”

“I should have a messenger go ahead and tell Watts to prepare…”

“No, I—”

She has to go back to the palace. She tried to protest, but the thought dissolved beneath a fresh wave of exhaustion.

“…Ugh.”

Her vision darkened, and she felt strong arms tighten around her. He was someone she should resent, but in that moment, all she felt was relief.

* * *

“Ah—!”

When Rosalyn opened her eyes, an unfamiliar ceiling greeted her. Blinking groggily, she tried to recall what happened before she lost consciousness.

If she remembered right, she’d fainted in the Duke’s arms.

“So this is the Inverness estate…”

She sat up, pale-faced. Her suspicion was confirmed by the family crest etched on the basin atop the bedside table.

“I have to go back.”

If this got to Hares or the Second Queen, she had no idea what kind of fallout would follow. Struggling to steady herself, she stood just as the door opened.

“…!”

“You’re awake. Are you feeling alright? Don’t worry, I’ve already contacted the palace.”

The eyes that met hers were warm with genuine concern. Startled by this unexpected kindness, Rosalyn forgot to tense her muscles and promptly began to topple forward.

Only to be caught by a flash of blue light.

Fwoosh—

“Don’t push yourself, Lady.”

It was the same power she’d witnessed in the lounge. A gentle strand of dawn-blue energy supported her and set her safely on the bed.

“What are you after? What are you hoping to gain from this? You said you contacted the palace—are you planning to use me as a hostage?”

The anxiety slipped out before Rosalyn could catch herself. She slapped a hand over her mouth, embarrassed. Sebelia simply looked at her and sat down by the bed.

“Hm. It’d be a lie to say I helped you for no reason at all.”

“I figured as much.”

“But that doesn’t mean I plan to use you as a bargaining chip.”

There’s no such thing as kindness without strings attached. Rosalyn had learned that early in life, and her tone was sharp.

Sebelia held her silence for a moment, then opened the nightstand drawer and took out a familiar box.

Yuria’s Bracelet.

Rosalyn’s eyes narrowed as she saw it.

“So what, you’re going to use this to…?”

“I was going to negotiate with you using this. But that’s not my intention anymore. The power inside was good for only one use—it’s just a regular bracelet now.”

“What…?”

“You know I have the ability to draw out memories and make them real, right?”
