Chapter 285
Cahill calmly steered Sebelia toward the door, but Dehart didn’t have the room to pay attention to them.
“I’ll kill you—I’ll kill you all!”
Nathan’s focus was locked on a single target: Sebelia. Even as Dehart slammed him into the wall, breaking his nose, Nathan never once let his wild, hateful gaze stray from her.
“Take her and get out, now!”
Dehart’s golden eyes were wild and dangerous, like a beast cornered in the mountains. Supported by Cahill, Sebelia made her way to the door.
While he fumbled with the lock, Sebelia reached for the bell cord.
“…Huh?”
“What’s wrong?”
The bell cord was cut halfway through. Sebelia looked up in alarm, about to ask Cahill what happened, when she suddenly froze.
He had silently closed the distance between them, now standing only a hand’s breadth away, smiling with a strange calmness. There was something eerily off about him.
“Is there anything I can help you with, Miss Bella?”
His whispers gave her goosebumps. His green eyes had shifted, gleaming an unnatural blue.
Cahill let out a quiet laugh.
“You’ve always had good instincts, haven’t you?”
That voice…!
“Shh, let’s keep it down. I’m honestly just as flustered as you are by how this turned out.”
It lasted only a few seconds, but to Sebelia, it felt like a thousand years. She saw the syringe in Cahill’s right hand, and the way fake skin dangled from his neck.
Before she could even call out for Dehart, the tip of the syringe came flashing toward her neck.
“Bella!”
A man’s voice cut through the darkness, sharp like sunlight. The world spun, and Sebelia finally managed to open her eyes.
“D… Dehart…”
“Damn it. I had a bad feeling about this from the start. Should’ve just killed them both right away.”
Dehart’s voice shook as he clutched Sebelia to his chest.
“If anything happened to you, I…”
It wasn’t tears, but a strangled cry of anguish that escaped him. He’d been able to save her only by sheer luck—catching sight of Cahill moving to inject Sebelia through the window while he was fighting Nathan.
The sight had driven him into a rage. He’d unleashed a bolt of lightning at Nathan, then spun around and slammed Cahill against the wall.
“Dehart, look over there.”
Finally catching her breath, Sebelia pointed to the sunken wall. Lying on the floor, Cahill’s true form was finally revealed.
“…It was my father.”
With all his fake skin torn off, Cahill’s true identity was Silas Wheddon. Sebelia trembled with fury and disgust, unable to speak. Dehart stood and turned toward the mess.
“I’ll handle things here. You need to get back to the estate.”
“What? Wait—”
But before she could stop him, Dehart went to open the door—only to find it locked from the outside. Just as he was about to blast the door open with lightning, a chilling sensation ran down Sebelia’s spine.
When she looked up in shock, she saw Nathan, back on his feet, syringe in hand, charging straight at Dehart. He was moving far too fast for Sebelia to block him.
No—no!
There wasn’t even time to scream. Acting on pure instinct, Sebelia tried to conjure a barrier of blue light, but her magic failed, and she was wracked with a stabbing pain in her chest.
“Ahh…”
Dehart, catching her pained gasp, turned to see Nathan. Sparks flared in his golden eyes as the two men collided in a violent struggle.
“Damn…”
Already exhausted from earlier, Dehart began to lose ground. Nathan, clearly not in his right mind, looked monstrous—his muscles swollen and veins standing out black against his skin, eyes blazing red. It was clear he’d been subjected to something horrific.
“Die, die, die!”
He could only howl the same word, again and again, like a child. Not even lightning seemed to slow him down anymore.
“Aaaargh!”
Sebelia watched in horror as Nathan, unfazed by the lightning, slammed Dehart into the wall. The crash echoed, and the stone began to crumble.
Outside, fireworks exploded, painting the night sky in brilliant colors. It was only then that Sebelia realized the noise from the tower was being swallowed up by the festivities.
Under that beautiful sky, some people were dancing in a glittering palace, while others were fighting desperately for their lives.
“Dehart!”
Just then, something blue flashed past her. Forcing herself to her feet, Sebelia’s eyes went wide with horror.
Etira was streaking like an arrow toward Nathan.
She couldn’t stop it beforehand. The tiny bird shot forward, and as Etira spread her wings, a blinding light erupted, blasting outward in every direction.
